II.Abouttheauthorandthestory:

Author:

TheManinAsbestosisanallegoryofthefuturewrittenbyStephenButlerLeacock(1869-1944),theCanadianauthor,whowilllongberememberedforhisbest-sellingbookSunshineSketchesofaLittleTown(1912)aswellasthenumerousawardsandhonourshereceivedduringhisillustriouslifetimeasauthor,professor,lecturerandhumourist.

Story:

Inthisfuturiststory,thereareobservationsofhumannaturewhichareasrefreshingtodayaswhentheywerewrittenin1911.Leacockdescribesaworldwheretheinhabitantsarecladinlong-wearingsuitsofasbestos;wheredeathhasbeeneliminated,althoughapersoncanbebroken;andwhereonlyavestigialmemoryofWorkremains,anythingrequiringeffortwasaccomplishedcenturiesago-inshort,aperfectworlditis.

Theoriginalendingofthestory:

withthehumofthewicked,busyoldworldallaboutme,andloudinmyearsthevoiceoftheindignantmanacrossthecorridor.

"Quityourblatting,youinfernalblatherskite,"hewascalling."Comedowntoearth."

1.Themainideaandstyle.

Suchmomentous(big)problemsashunger,war,disease,naturaldisastersandinequalityarewhatgiveslifeinterest,fullness(richness)andpurpose;inotherwords,thesearethethingsthatmakeushuman.(Thereasoninghasbeenconsideredasajustificationofthestatusquoandapleafortheendofhumanprogress.

Ontheotherhand,thearticleperhapsdoesraiseathought-provokingquestion.Problemsarisewhilehumanbeingsaredevelopingthuswehavetocontinuetoworkhard,tomakepainstakingefforts,torunrisks,andtosuffer.Pain,anxiety,failureandsacrificewillstillbepartofhumanexperience.Indeed,aworldwithouttheseisnotonlyimpossible,butalsoundesirable.

ThegenreofthestoryisagenrecommonintheWestduringthe20thcentury,whichcouldbecalled“literarydystopia”(theoppositeofUtopia)TheManinAsbestospaintsthefutureindarklypessimisticcolors.Inthe“newsociety”presentedbyLeacock,thereisnohunger,war,ordisease;naturaldisastersandgenderinequalityhavebeeneliminated,butlifeisdull,emptyandmeaningless.

Style:

ThestorywasoriginallytoldbythestrangemanandretoldbyJorkens.Thewhole

storyiswritteninthedirectspeech,thusthewriteadoptsacolloquialstyle.
