WhatIsRealBeauty?

  Itishumannaturethatallofusshouldbefondofbeauty.Everybodywasbornwithaheartforbeauty.

  TodayinChina,withtherisingofourlivingstandard,people'srequirementofbeautyhasbeenheightenedaccordingly.Somepeoplesparenomoneyorenergyonbeautifulclothes,fashionablehairstyles,thedecorationoftheirhousesandeventheimprovementoftheirlooks.Butitseemstome,all

thesearemoreorlessconfinedtothebeautyinappearance,orrather,theoutwardbeauty.

  Inmyopinion,weshouldn'tonlypayattentiontobeautifulappearanceandneglectthebeautificationofthemindandwhatweareaftershouldbetheperfectunityoftheoutwardbeautyandtheinnerbeauty.Asweallknow,sofarasobjectsandanimalsareconcerned,thereisonlybeautifulappearancetobementioned,buttoushumanbeings,althoughtheoutwardbeautyreallymatters,theinnerbeautyismuchmoreimportant.ThiswasconfirmedbyafamousRussianwriterinwordsmuchlikethis:

"Apersonis

notlovelyforbeingbeautifulbutbeautifulforbeinglovely."

  Here,I'dliketoquotetwotypicalinstancesandI'msure,mydearfriends,fromthemyou'llfindoutwhatrealbeautyis.

  RecentlyIlearnedfromtheradioanunpleasantincidentaboutawellknownsinger.Sheisverycharmingwithasweetbeautifulvoiceandveryfamousforsingingthesong."DevotionofLove".Notlongago,shewasinvitedtoZhejiangProvincetogiveperformance.Themomentshewastoappearonthestage,shesuddenlyaskedformorereward.Worsestill,afterherrequestwassatisfied,shedidn'tbegintosingatonce.Instead,shetookhertimetocountallthemoneypiecebypiece.Thusshekepttheaudiencewaitingforhalfanhour.Sowhensheatlastshowedupandstartedtosing"DevotionofLove",amanroseupfromhisseatandshoutedather,"Youdon'thaveanydevotionoflove.Youarenotqualifiedtosingthissong!

"Hearingthis,thesingerstoppedsingingandbegantoshoutabuseswithherfingerpointedattheman.Atthistimethewholeaudienceburstintoanuproar.

   Howdisappointedherkeenlistenerswerewhentheylearnedthis!

Itisthesingerherselfwhospoiledherbeautifulimageintheeyesofothers.

  Now,I'mcomingtoanothertruestory.It'saboutapoor,ordinarylookingoldwoman.Shewasawidowwithoutanychildren,livingbarelyfromhandtomouthbypickingoddsandendsfromrubbishheaps.However,shetookinmorethantenhomelessorphanssuccessivelyandmanagedtobringthemup.Everydayshelaboredfrommorningtillnight.Inordertoearnasmuchmoneyaspossibletoraisethechildrenandtokeeptheminschool,sheevenwenttoahospitalregularlytosellherblood.Shegotsoweakforthelossofbloodthatshesometimesfellinafaintonherwayhome.

   Whenaskedwhyshechosetoburdenherselfwithsomanychildren,shesmiledandsimplyanswered,"Oh,IlovechildrenandIliketohavetheircompany."

  Thoughtheoldwomanwaspoormaterially,shewasfullofaffectionandrichinspirit.Shewasloveddearlybyherchildren.Shewasalsohighlyappreciatedbythelocalgovernment,andtrulyrespectedbypeopleinhercommunity.

Maybeyoucan'thelpwondering,"Whatmakesthatordinarywomansoextraordinary?

"Itisnothingelsebutherinnerbeauty,hertruedevotionoflovewithoutanythoughtofrewarding.Whatasharpcontrastthereisbetweenthegreatwomanandtheselfishsinger]

   So,toanswerthequestion"Whatisrealbeauty?

",Ideclaredefinitely,itisthebeautylyinginone'sheartofheartsandembodiedinhisactionsanddeeds,thatis,theinnerheauty!

ResponsibilityisaBadgeofHonourforYouth

   Facingthisaudienceonthestage,Ihavetheexcitingfeelingofparticipatinginthemarchofhistory,forwhatwearefacingtodayismorethanamerecompetitionorcontest.ItisanassemblyofsomeofChina'smosttalentedandmotivatedpeople,representativesofayoungergenerationthatarepreparingthemselvesforthecomingofanewcentury.

   I'mgratefulthatI'vebeengiventhisopportunity,atsuchahistoricmoment,tostandhereasaspokesmanofmygenerationandtotakeaseriouslookbackatthepast15years,acrucialperiodforeveryoneofusandforthisnationaswell.

   Thoughitisonlywithinmypowertotellaboutmypersonalexperience,andonlyatinyfragmentofitatthat,itstillrepresents,Ibelieve,therootofaspiritwhichhasbeenessentialtomeandtoallthepeoplebredbythepast15years.

   Inmyelementaryyears,therewasalittlegirlintheclasswhoworkedveryhardbutsomehowcouldneverdosatisfactorilyinherlessons.

   Theteacheraskedmetohelpher,anditwasobviousthatsheexpectedalotfromme.butasayoungboy,restless,thoughtless,Ialwaystriedtoevadehersoastogetmoretimetoenjoymyself.

   Onedaybeforethefinalexam,shecameuptomeandsaid,"Couldyoupleaseexplainthistome?

Iwantverymuchtodobetterthistime."Istartedexplaining,andfinishedinahurry.Pretendingnottonoticeherstillconfusedeyes,Iranoffquickly.Natsurprisingly,sheagaindidverybadlyintheexam.Andtwomonthslater,atthebeginningofthenewsemester,wordcameofherdeathofbloodcancer.NooneeverknewaboutthelittletaskIfailedtofulfill,butIcouldn'tforgivemyself.Isimplycouldn'tforgethereyes,whichseemtobeasking,"Whydidn'tyoudoalittlemoretohelpme,whenitwassoeasyforyou?

Whydidn'tyouunderstandalittlebetterthetrustplacedinyou,sothatIwouldnothavetoleavethisworldinsuchpainandregret?

"

  Iwasabouteightornineyearsoldatthattime,butinawayitwastheverystartingpointofmylife,forIbegantounderstandtheword"responsibility"andtolearntoalwaysdomydutiesfaithfullyanddevotedly,fortheimplicationsofthatsacredwordhasdawnedonme:

themutualneedandtrustofpeople,theco-operationandinter-reliancewhicharetheveryfoundationofhumansociety.

   Laterinmylife,Icontinuedtoexperiencemanyfailures.ButneveragaindidIfeelthatregretwhichstruckmeatthedeathofthegirl,foritmakesmyheartsatisfiedtothinkthatIhavealwaysdoneeverythinginmypowertofulfillmyresponsibilitiesasbestIcan.

   AsIgrewup,changedandimprovedbythisincidentandmanyothersimilarones,Ibegantoperceivethechangestakingplacearoundmeandtofindthatsociety,inaway,wasinitsformativeyearslikemyself.Newbuildings,newcommoditiesandnewfashionsappeareveryday.

   Newideas,newinformation,newtechnologies.Peoplecantalkwitheachotherfromanycorneroftheearthinamatterofseconds.Societyisbecomingmorecompetitive.

   Wordslikeindividualityandcreativityaregettingmoreemphasisandmorepeoplearerewardedfortheirhardworkandefforts.Suchistheerainwhichthisgeneration,growsandmatures.

    Suchistheerainwhichthisgenerationwilltakeoverthenationfromourfathersandlearntorunit.Yetinthemeantime,manyproblemsstillexist.

   Welearnthatcrimestakeplaceinbroaddaylightwithcrowdsofpeoplelookingonandnotassisting.Wehearthattherearestillabout1millionchildreninthiscountrywhocan'tevenaffordtogotoelementaryschoolswhileenormoussumsofmoneyarebeingsquanderedawayondinnerpartiesandluxurycars.

  Webuyshoddymedicines,ormerelyworthlessjunkinthenameofmedicines,thataggravate,ratherthanalleviateourdiseasessincemoney,manypeoplebelieve,isthemostimportantthingintheworldthatmustbemade,evenattheexpenseofmoralityandresponsibility.

   Suchanera,therefore,determinesthatweareagenerationwithakeenersenseofcompetitionandefficiencyandagreaterreadinesstothinkcriticallyandactcreatively. 

  Suchanera,furthermore,demands,thatweareagenerationwithaclearperceptionofourhistoricalresponsibilityandanaggressivewilltotakeactionandsolvetheproblems.Historyhaslongbeenpreparingthesequalitiesinthisgenerationanditisnowcallingusforwardtogivetestimonytoourpatriotismandheroismtowardsthisnationandallhumanity.

  Standingherenow,Ithinkofthepast15yearsofmylifeasanordinarystudent.ProbablyI'llbeanordinarymanfortherestofmylife.Butthisdoesn'tdiscouragemeany,forIknowthatwithmysenseofresponsibilityanddevotedeffortstoalwaysstrive,forthebest,it'sgoingtobeameaningfulandworthwhilelifethatIwillbeliving.

  Standingherenow,Ithinkofthepast15yearsofthisnation,whichhasachievedgreatnessthatinspiredmillionsofpeopleofmyage,mostofwhomwillnotattainfameorprestigeandonlyafewofwhomwillberememberedbyposterity.Butthatdoesn'tdiscourageusany,becauseweknowthattheworldwatches,theworldlistens,theworldiswaitingtoseewherethisnationwillbeheadinginatimeofrichopportunitiesandfiercecompetition.

  Ican'teverforgetthatlittlegirlinmyclasswhocouldn'thadthesameopportunitiesasanyofusheretoenjoyawonderfullifetodayandahopefulworldtomorrow.

  Itisthesacredresponsibilityofthisgenerationtofaceuptothechallengesofthenewcenturyandtodevoteoursweatandblood,ourwisdomandpassion,tothehistoriccauseofmakingthisnationagreaterandhappierlandforeveryoneofus.

  Wearenotgoingtoevadethatresponsibility.Wearegoingtoletpeopledown.Andpeople,farandnear,willhearofus.Frostwillbebroughttotheirbackbonesandtearstotheireyeswhenourstoriesaretoldandretold,Soletusgoforth,myfellowmembersofthisluckilychosengeneration,andm
