Friendshipisoneofthebasicbondsbetweenhumanbeings.Whilethecharacteristicsoffriendshipmightvaryfromonecountrytoanother,peoplefromallculturesnotonlyenjoyfriendsbutneedthem.

“Nomanisanisland.”Inotherwords,weareallpartofsociety.Weallneedthelove,admiration,respectandmoralsupportofotherpeople.Ifwearefortunate,ourfriendswillprovideuswithallofthesenecessaryaspectsoflife.

Asmostpeopleobserve,therearemanylevelsoffriendship.Thedegreeorintensityoffriendshipvariesdependingonthepersonalityoftheindividualsinvolvedandthecontextoftherelationships.Extrovertsenjoybeingsurroundedbymanypeoplewhereasintrovertsareperhapscontentwithfewerbutmoreintensefriendships.

Everyoneisnotequallyopenwithallhisfriends.Thedegreeofintimacyisdeterminedbymanyfactors.Closefriendscanbeformedatanystageinone’slifebuttheyareusuallyveryrare.Notverymanypeoplehavemorethanafewreallyclosefriends.Irrespectiveofthelevelofintimacy,allfriendshipsarebasedonreciprocity,honestyandacertainamountofloveandaffection.

Friendsprovideasourceofstimulation,pleasure,laughterandsecurity.Knowingthattherearepeopleintheworld,otherthanourfamily,whocareaboutusandwhoenjoyourcompanyisbothcomfortingandreassuring.Knowingthatwehavefriendsthatwecanhelpintimeofneedisalsoapositivefeeling.Truefriendshipcomesfromthepleasureofbothgivingandreceiving.
