In1993,eight-year-oldBrandonKeefesatinacornerattheHollygroveChildren’sHome,waitingforhismothertofinishtalking.HeheardthatHollygroveHomeneededalibrary,butalltheyhadwasanemptyspaceandlotsofkidswithoutbooks.

Brandonwassurprisedwhen,oneday,aphotographerfromtheLosAngelesTimescalledhimoutofclass.Theywroteabouthiminthenewspaper,whichledtosomelocalcommunityserviceawards.ThenhewasinvitedtoappearontheverypopularTVprogramOprah.Brandonsaid,“AfterappearingonOprah,manypeopleknewaboutusandwewereabletosetupanon-profitorganizationcalledBookEnds.”

By2001,the60,000volunteershadcollectedaround150,000booksforBookEnds.Theyhadcompleted46libraries,with32moreunderdevelopment,helpingmorethan40,000childrenwhodidn’thavebooksbefore.
