ThenewexamsweredevisedafterproposalsbyacademicsatKing'sCollegeLondon,whotoldministersthatsciencelessonswereoften"dullandboring"andrequiredpupilstorecalltoomanyfacts.Theirreportsaid:
"Contemporaryanalysesofthelabourmarketsuggestthatourfuturesocietywillneedalargernumberofindividualswithabroaderunderstandingofsciencebothfortheirworkandtoenablethemtoparticipateascitizensinademocraticsociety."
However,ProfessorColinBlakemore,chiefexecutiveoftheMedicalResearchCouncil,warnedthatreducingthe"hard"sciencetaughtinschoolswouldcreateproblems."Icanunderstandthegovernment'smotives,"hesaid."Thereisacrisisofpublicconfidenceinsciencewhichisreducingtheprogressofpolicyonsuchissuesasnuclearenergyandstemcellresearch.Butsixth-formersarealreadyarrivingatuniversitywithoutthedepthofknowledgerequired."Othersendorsethenewapproach.ResultsatNorthChaddertonupperschoolinOldham—oneof80schoolspilotingthenew"softer"GCSE,named21stCenturyScience—haveimproved.MartynOvery,theheadofscience,said:
"Theproportiongettinghighergradesinsciencewentupfrom60%to75%.Thecoursekepttheirinterest,hadmoreprojectworkandwasmorerelevam."
Aspartoftheircourse,thepupilsstudiedwhatkindoffoodtheyneededtokeepfitandhealthy.CriticssayitisonlymarginallymoredemandingthanfollowingtheadviceofNigellaLawson,thetelevisionchefwhopromotesthebenefitsofeatingpropermealsinsteadofsnackingfromthefridge.Somescienceteachersareskeptical.MoAfzai,headofscienceattheindependentWarwickschool,said:
