UCR-CSSA

IamaninternationalstudentwhocomesfromChina.Joiningclubsandorganizationsisoneofthemostexcitingandinterestingpartsformanyinternationalstudents.TherearenumerousclubsamongtheundergraduatesinUCRandtheonewhichisthemostfamousamongChinesestudentsisChineseStudentsandScholarsAssociation（CSSA）.CSSAatUniversityofCalifornia,Riversidewasfoundedin1986.Itisanindependent,autonomousnon-politicalorganizationformedbyChinesestudentsandscholarsatUCR.CSSAisnecessarilyestablishedforthereasonthatmanyChineseinternationalstudentsattendUniversityofCaliforniaRiversideeveryyearandsomeofthemarewillingtohaveanassociationtorepresentthem（AssociationofChineseStudentsandScholarsofficialcites,2008.Web.23Apr.2008）.ThemainresponsibilityofCSSAistohelpaway-from-homeChineseintheirstudy,work,andotherissues.CSSAalsoservesasabridgebetweentheChineseandothercommunities,spreadingChineseculture.TheorganizationisheldbyChinesestudentsinUCRandthepresentChairmanisJimmyZheng,whoisanoutgoinggraduatestundetfromShanghai,China.ThemainpurposeoftheorganizationistohelptheseChinesestudentswhoarestudyingabroadintheUnitedStatesalonefeellesslonelyinUCR.CSSAwillholdsomepartiesoreventseveryweekendinordertomakeChinesestudentsgetclosertoeachother.

CSSAisanorganizationwhichhashighcohesionbetweenmembers.IjoinedCSSAlastyearandwasamemberoftheactivitydepartment,soIwasabletoparticipateinthepreparationofChineseNewYearparty.Webegantoplanforthepartytwomonthsbefore.Everystaffpersontookpartinthepreparation.However,wemetalotofdifficultiesduringthattime.Forexample,therewerenotenoughperformances.Everyonehadtriedhisbesttolookforperformers,butstillcouldonlyhavefiveperformances.ThenJimmyZhengaskedustoatleastprepareanotherfiveperformances.Wehadnochoicebuttopracticeperformanceseverydaytoachievetherequirementandfinallycameupwithfivenewperformances.Asweimagined,morethanahundredpeopleattendedtheNewYearparty.Peoplehadagreattimestayingwitheachother.TheyfelttheatmosphereofChineseNewYearalthoughtheywerenotinChina.ItisthemostsuccessfuleventthatCSSAhaseverheld.

ToknowmoreabouttheChineseStudentsAssociation,IdecidedtohaveaninterviewwiththechairmanZheng.Herepliedimmediatelyintextmessagethathewouldliketoanswermyquestionsandmakemorepeopleknowabouttheclub.Thus,inasunnyafternoon,hemetmeataStarbuckslocatedacrossfromtheUCR’sextension.Zhengwastall.HewasinawhiteT-shirtandlookedsimpleandhonest.

“WouldmanyChinesestudentsattendtotheeventsorpartieswhichCSSAholdseveryweekend?

”IaskedZheng.

“Mostoftimetheydo.Studentsloveparties.Theyworksohardeverydayinordertocompletetheircollegerequirements.However,peoplearenotmachines.Theyneedtimetorelax.CSSAprovidestheplaceandactivitiesforChinesestudentstoenjoytheirfreetime,butduringthemidtermorfinalweek,theamountofpeoplewhojointheactivitieswoulddecrease,butitdoesn’tmatterbecausestudyingshouldbemoreimportantthanparties,”Zhenganswered.

“Well,isitdifficultforyoutoholdtheeventseveryweekandwillthejobsofchairmaninfluenceyourstudy?

”Iadded.

“Actually,yes.ThestaffandIfeelhardtodesigntheeventeveryweekbecausewecannotholdthesameeventaslastweek,right?

Also,thepartyshouldhaveitsowntheme,butitiseasierbecausewecancelebratebothChinesefestivalsandAmericanholidays.However,whenIseethesmileoneachstudent’sface,Ithinkoureffortisworthit.Aboutthesecondquestion,myanswerisstillyes.Itisdifficulttobebothacollegestudentandaclub’schairmanbecausebothofthesejobsarehardtomaintaininagoodstatus,”Hereplied.

Zhengtoldmethatheisagraduatestudentandismajoringineconomic,soheislookingforaninternshipandalsohasalotofresearchtocomplete.However,theclub’saffairsinterrupthisattentiontostudy.Thus,heusuallyneedstostayuplateatnighttocompletehishomeworkandtodealwithclubactivities.ItistiringbutwhenheheldasuccessfuleventandwhenhesawthatmanyChinesestudentsenjoyedtheparty,hewouldbeveryhappytodosuchatiringjob.

Asweknow,everyoneinChinacelebratestheNewYearwithfamilies.ItisthemostimportantfestivalinChina.However,studentslikeuscannotflybacktoourhomeandcelebratetheNewYearwithourparentsbecause,duringthattime,westillhaveclass.Atthattime,moststudentswillmisstheirhomesandfeellonelierthanothertimes.CSSAhasatraditiontoholdabigpartywhichwelcomesChinesestudentstocomeandcelebratethefestivaleveryyear.Eventhoughwearethousandsofmilesawayfromourhometown,wecanstillfeeltheatmosphereofChineseNewYear.

CSSAfacedsomeproblemsthatwerehardtodealwithbefore.Wetrytohavemorestudentsinvolvedinoureventsbutasyouknow,oneoftheimportantthingsforourorganizationistoraisemoneyandtomaintaintheclub.Therefore,wesellticketsforoureventtocollectmoneythatmaintainstheclub.Becauseofthat,somestudentsthinkourgoalistomakemoneyfromthem.Ifeelhurttohearthesewords.Theproblemisthatwecannotachieveeverystudent’strust,butwearedyingtodoabetterjob,”Zhengsaid.

CSSAisgrowingandexpanding.ItisworkingonpromotingitselftoallthestudentsinUCR.Althoughitisanofficialorganization,alotofstudentsstillarenotfamiliarwithCSSA.WeareworkingtoleteverystudentknowthatCSSAisnotonlyanorganizationforacademiclifebutalsoaplaceforstudentstohavefun.
