3.Afterlearningunitone,studentsshouldhavethebasicunderstandingofsuffixandprefixandtrytousetheword-buildingknowledgetoexpandtheirvocabulary.

I.Readingskill:

ContextCluetoWordMeaning

Contextmeansthewordsorsentencesbeforeoraftertheitemyoudonotknow.Contextsometimesprovidesdefinitionclues.Consider:

Linguistics,thescientificstudyoflanguage,isveryimportantforlanguagestudents.Noticetheitalicizedwordisclearlydefined.Besidestheformaldefinition,thewritermayalsogiveexplanationaftersuchpunctuationmarksascomma,dashorwithinparentheses.

Contextsometimesgivesexampleclues.Consider:

likehorses,humanbeingshaveavarietyofgaits,theyamble,stride,jogandsprint.Noticeseveralexamplesaregiventoshedlightonthemeaningoftheitalicizedword“gait”,awayofwayofwalking.Inthesentenceswithexampleclues,theexamplesareusuallysignaledbycertainwordsorphraseslikesuchas,including,forexample,forinstanceortoillustrate.

Althoughcontextcluesareusefulindiscoveringthemeaningofanunknownword,therearesomelimitationstothisapproach.Themeaningyougetfromthecontextmaybevagueorgeneral.Sometimesthereistoomuchunfamiliarlanguagetoallowyoutousethecontext.Whileyoudon’tinterruptyourreadingtolookupnewwordsinadictionary,youmaystillwanttocheckyourguessifyoufindthatsomewordisusedoften,andseemstobeanimportantoneinyourfield.Insuchcases,marktheunknownwordswhenyouarereading,andlookthemuplater.
