Forcenturies,Pompeiilayburiedunderstoneandash.Then,intheyear1861,anItalianscientistnamedGinseppebegantouncoverPompeii.Slowly,carefully,Ginseppeandhismendug.ThecitylookedalmostthesameasithadlookedinAD79.Therewerestreetsandfountains,housesandshops.Therewasastadiumwith20,000seats.

Perhapsthemostimportantofall,therewereeverydayobjects,whichtellusagreatdealaboutthepeoplewholivedinPompeii.Manyglassesandjarshadsomedarkbluecolourinthebottom,soweknowthatthepeopleofPompeiilikedwine.Theylikedbread,too,metalbreadpanswereineverybakery.Inonebakerytherewere81round,flatloavesofbread—atypeofbreadthatisstillsoldinItalytoday.Tinyboxesfilledwithadark,shinypowdertellusthatwomenlikedtoweareye-makeup.

Ginseppehasdied,buthisworkcontinues.One-fourthhasnotbeenuncoveredyet.Scientistsarestilldigging,stillmakingdiscoveriesthatdrawthetouriststoPompeii.
