In1890,theUnitedStateshadbecometheworld'snumberoneeconomicgiant.AndthepercapitaincomeintheUnitedStateswasmorethanEuropein1900;ithadbecomeoneofthetyrantsoftheworldeconomy.Atthesametime,theworld'sscientificcenterstransferredfromEuropetoUSA.TheUnitedStateshadbecomeaparadisefordreamersandgamblers;theycamefromeverycorneroftheworld,lookingforwealth.
In1900,nearly14%of76millionpeoplewerebornabroadinUSA.AndtheimmigrationwasacrucialelementtomaketheUnitedStateseconomymaintainstrong.Inthefirstdecadeofthe20thcentury,thereweremorethan100millionimmigrantsflewintotheUnitedStatesbyseaeachyear.Thisisthebackgroundwhenthepianistwasborn;hewasalsoanabandonedsonofanimmigrant.
Inthemovie,theonlyfriendofthepianistnamedMaxaskedhimwhetherhewasstillplayinginthewar.AndthewarreferredtotheFirstWorldWar.WorldWarIbrokeoutfromAugust4,1914andendedinNovember11,1918.
IntheFirstWorldWar,theUnitedStatesacceptedordersfromalargenumberofcountries.FromJune1914toJune1917,theforeigntradesurplusoftheUnitedStatesincreasedfrom430millionU.S.dollarsto3.56billionU.S.dollars.Upto1919,thereweremorethan20countriesintheworldborrowedmoneyfromtheUnitedStates.ThefinancialcenteroftheworldhadbeguntotransferfromLondontotheWallStreet.
In1933,pianist’sfriendMaxwenttopawnhistrumpet.AndthebackgroundwasthattheeconomiccrisishadbegunintheUnitedStatesafterthecollapseofthestockmarketinNewYork,andquicklyengulfedtheentirecapitalistworld.Earlyin1933,morethan18,000banksdepositedtotally41billionU.S.dollars,whiletheinventoryofcashwerelessthansixbillionU.S.dollars,andradicallycouldnotcopewithdepositors’withdrawals.UptoearlyMarch,morethan6,000bankswentbankruptandtheAmericanpublicwasinapanic.Productshadbeenpiledmountainhighandcouldnotbeensoldatall.Atthesametime,therewasasignificantreductioninthenumberoftheoverseaimmigrants.Andthisyear,thepianistsacrificedhisownlifefortheship.
