Influenza,aninfectiousdisease,hasbeenwithusforalong,longtime.AccordingtosomeGreekwritersonmedicalhistory,theoutbreakofinfluenzawasin412BC.ThesamehasbeensuggestedofthesicknessthatsweptthroughtheGreekarmyattackingSyracusein395BC.Fluisakindofdiseasethatmovesmostquicklyamongpeoplelivingincrowdedconditions,henceitislikelytoattackarmies.

Duringthe19thcenturytherewerefivewidespreadoutbreaksofinfluenza.Thelastofthefivehappenedin1889andmarkedthebeginningofthestoryofinfluenzainourtime.Likethepresentoutbreak,itstartedinAsia.Formorethan40yearsbeforethatoutbreak,influenzahadsteadilydecreasedandwasbelievedtobedyingout.Anewgroupofoutbreakswasintroducedbytheoutbreakof1889_1890andforthenextquarterofacenturyfluremainedaconstantthreat.

Medicalscienceisstillnotcertainwhathitusin1918.Thevirusofinfluenzawasnotfounduntil1933,soallthattodaycanbesaidaboutthe1918outbreakisthekindofantibodiesitproduced.Butthefluvirusprovedtrickierthanmost.Avaccine(疫苗)whichcouldfightonetypegaveaprotectionagainstanother.Indeedanytypeofviruschangesitsnaturesoquicklythataperfectlygoodvaccinemayloseitsvaluebecauseofthechange.Thisincreasestheneedforthespeedydiscoveryoffluoutbreaks,sothatstocks(备料)oftherightvaccinecanbepreparedquicklyafteranoutbreak.
