NowtheresearcherteachestwoclassesofGrade7ofajuniorhighschool.Thestudentsare12-13yearsoldandtheclasssizeislarge,eachhaving60students.Thestudentsareexperiencingaperiodoftransitionfromprimaryschooltojuniorschool.MostchildrenbeginformallytogetaccesstoEnglish.Theyarecuriousaboutthislanguage.Atthesametimetheyhavedoubtsandfearsofspeakingitbecauseoftheirlackofvocabularyandgrammarknowledge.Theydonotlikespeakingactively.Theyareafraidoflosingfacebeforeclassandtheteacher.

Teacher’sside:

Duringtheteachingtheteachergaveinstructions,madeupconversationwithafewstudents,gaveanswersinsteadofstudentsorevengavemonologuesinlecture.Obviouslyinthiskindofclasstheteacherwasstillinthecenteroftheclassandthestudentsbecamepassiverecipients.Theteacherdidn’tgivethestudentsenoughopportunitiestopracticespeaking.

Thoughthestudents’vocabularyislimited,thetopicsdesignedarefamiliartothem.Thevitalproblemisthestudentsneedpreparationbeforespeakingtoavoidthestressduringtheconversationwiththeirteacher.Theyshouldbeaskedtospeakadequatelywiththeirpartnersbeforepresentationbeforeclass.

Classroomactivities’style:

Thoughthecommunicativeteachingmethodwasusedintheirpresentteaching,theclassroomactivitiesaresingle.Almostalltheactivitiesarelimitedtotheinteractionbetweentheteacherandthestudents.Thismaymakethestudentssufferfrompsychologicalpressure.Students-to-studentsreactionsisnotfurtherenough.Sothestudentswerepassiveandshortofcreativityandmotivation，andthelearningmotivationisdepressed.

Resultsofproblemanalysis

Fromtheaboveanalysis,acommoncausesurfaced.Thatistheactivitiestheteacherdesignedwasnotappropriateforthestudents.Sotheresearcherdesignedathree-weekprojectbychangingtheteachingformsandorganizingcooperativelearningactivitiestoarousethestudents’speakingpassionandimprovestudents’speakingcapacity.
