ProblemIdentification

●Definetheproblemintermsofyourownteachingsituation(e.g.classroomorprivatetutoring).

●Theresearchproblemshouldbespecificandresearchablefora3-weekproject.

AsanEnglishteacher,theresearcherhasplacedgreatemphasisonoralEnglishteaching.Shefoundmoststudentswouldnotliketoparticipateinspeakingtasksactively.Theyseemednervousandshy.Theygotusedtolisteningtotheteacher,makingnotesoransweringtheteacher’squestionssometimes.Theatmosphereintheclassroomwasalittledreary.

●Describeyourteachingsituationclearly,ie.,theschooltype,yourteachingexperience,theproblemthathastroubledyouandyourstudentsandhowyou/yourcolleagueshavetriedtosolvetheproblem.

●Explainwhytheproblemissignificantandresearchable.

●Insertyourdescriptionoftheprojectproblemthespacebelow.

NowtheresearcherteachestwoclassesofGrade7ofajuniorhighschool.Thestudentsare12-13yearsoldandtheclasssizeislarge,eachhaving60students.Thestudentsareexperiencingaperiodoftransitionfromprimaryschooltojuniorschool.MostchildrenbeginformallytogetaccesstoEnglish.Theyarecuriousaboutthislanguage.Atthesametimetheyhavedoubtsandfearsofspeakingitbecauseoftheirlackofvocabularyandgrammarknowledge.Theydonotlikespeakingactively.Theyareafraidoflosingfacebeforeclassandtheteacher.

2.Causeanalysis

Thisanalysisinvolvedinsomefactorsthatmaycausetheproblem:

Teacher’sside:

Duringtheteachingtheteachergaveinstructions,madeupconversationwithafewstudents,gaveanswersinsteadofstudentsorevengavemonologuesinlecture.Obviouslyinthiskindofclasstheteacherwasstillinthecenteroftheclassandthestudentsbecamepassiverecipients.Theteacherdidn’tgivethestudentsenoughopportunitiestopracticespeaking.

Students’side:

Thoughthestudents’vocabularyislimited,thetopicsdesignedarefamiliartothem.Thevitalproblemisthestudentsneedpreparationbeforespeakingtoavoidthestressduringtheconversationwiththeirteacher.Theyshouldbeaskedtospeakadequatelywiththeirpartnersbeforepresentationbeforeclass.

Classroomactivities’style:

Thoughthecommunicativeteachingmethodwasusedintheirpresentteaching,theclassroomactivitiesaresingle.Almostalltheactivitiesarelimitedtotheinteractionbetweentheteacherandthestudents.Thismaymakethestudentssufferfrompsychologicalpressure.Students-to-studentsreactionsisnotfurtherenough.Sothestudentswerepassiveandshortofcreativityandmotivation,andthelearningmotivationisdepressed.

Resultsofproblemanalysis

Fromtheaboveanalysis,acommoncausesurfaced.Thatistheactivitiestheteacherdesignedwasnotappropriateforthestudents.Sotheresearcherdesignedathree-weekprojectbychangingtheteachingformsandorganizingcooperativelearningactivitiestoarousethestudents’speakingpassionandimprovestudents’speakingcapacity.
