WhenAlfred’sbrotherLudwigdiedin1888,aFrenchnewspapermistakenlypublishedAlfred’sobituary(讣告).Readinghisownobituary,Nobelwasdisappointedtofindouthispublicimage(形象).Thenewspaperstronglyblamed(责备)Nobelforinventingdynamite,givinghimthenicknameof“themerchantofdeath”andsaying“Dr.AlfredNobel,whobecamerichbyfindingwaystokillmorepeoplefasterthaneverbefore,diedyesterday.”

ToAlfred,thisobituarywasawarning.Hespenthislifetimealoneinventingthingsandwasdeeplyconcernedwithhowhewouldberemembered.Thisunfortunateeventinspiredhimtomakechangesinhiswill(遗嘱),soastoimprovehispublicimage,andtoberememberedforagoodcause.

In1895,oneyearbeforehisdeath,Nobelmadethelastwill,sayingclearlythathiswealthwouldbeusedtocreateaseriesofprizesforthosewhohavemadegreatcontributionstomankindinphysics,chemistry,physiologyormedicine,literature,andpeace.Towidespreadastonishment,Dr.AlfredNobelgaveaway94%ofhistotalwealthtofoundthefiveNobelPrizes.
