Part1
Ilovethisplace.Thankyouallforcomingoutintherain.Wegonna(会)makeitworthforyou.
PresidentFaust,BoardofOverseers,faculty,alumni,friends,proudparents,membersoftheadboard,andgraduatesofthegreatestuniversityintheworld,
I'mhonoredtobewithyoutodaybecause,let'sfaceit,youaccomplishedsomethingInevercould.IfIgetthroughthisspeech,it'llbethefirsttimeIactuallyfinishsomethingatHarvard.Classof2017,congratulations!
I'manunlikelyspeakertoday,notjustbecauseIdroppedout,butbecausewe'retechnicallyinthesamegeneration.Wewalkedthisyardlessthanadecadeapart,studiedthesameideasandsleptthroughthesameEc10lectures.Wemayhavetakendifferentroadstogethere,especiallyifyoucameallthewayfromtheQuad,buttodayiwanttosharewhatI'velearnedaboutourgenerationandtheworldwe'reallbuildingtogether.
Butfirst,theselastcoupleofdayshavebroughtbackalotofgoodmemories.
Howmanyofyourememberexactlywhereyouwere,whatyouweredoingwhenyougotthatemailtellingyouthatyougotintoHarvard?
IwasplayingCivilizationandirandownstairs,gotmydad,andforsomereason,hisfirstreactionwastovideomeopeningtheemail.Thatcouldhavebeenareallyreallysadvideo.ButisweargettingintoHarvardisthethingmyparentsaremostproudofmefor.
Mymomisnodding.YouallknowwhatI'mtalkingabout.Lookguys,it'stoughtobethis,you'llsoongetoutofthere.
HowmanyofyourememberyourfirstlectureatHarvard?

ButmybestmemoryfromHarvardwasmeetingPriscilla.IhadjustlaunchedthisprankwebsiteFacemash,andtheadboardwantedto"seeme".EveryoneIwasgonnagetkickedout.Myparentsdroveheretohelpmepackmystuff.Myfriendsthrewmeagoingawayparty.Whodoesthat?
Asluckwouldhaveit,Priscillawasatthatpartywithherfriend.WemetinlineforthebathroominthePfohoBelltower,andinwhatmustbeoneofthealltimeromanticlines,Iturnedtoherandsaid:
"I'mgoingtogetkickedoutinthreedays,soweneedtogoonadatequickly."
但是我在哈佛最美好的回忆,是我遇见了Priscilla(扎克伯格妻子)。
"
Actually,anyofyougraduatingtodaycanusethatline.I'mgettingkickedouttodayweneedtogodatefast.
Part2
I didn't end up getting kicked out -- I did that to myself. Priscilla and I started dating. And, you know, that movie made it seem like Facemash was so important to starting Facebook. It wasn't. But without Facemash I would never have met Priscilla, and she's the most important person in my life, so you could still say it was the most important thing I built inmytime.
Priscilla
We'veallstartedlifelongfriendshipshere,andsomeofusevenfamilies.That'swhyI'msogratefultothisplace.Thanks,Harvard.
TodayIwanttotalkaboutpurpose.ButI'mnotheretogiveyouthestandardcommencementaboutfindingyourpurpose.We'remillennials.We'lltrytodothatinstinctively.Instead,I'mheretotellyoufindingyourpurposeisn'tenough.Thechallengeforourgenerationiscreatingaworldwhereeveryonehasasenseofpurpose.
OneofmyfavoritestoriesiswhenJohnFKennedyvisitedtheNASAspacecenter,hesawajanitorholdingabroomandhewalkedoverandaskedwhathewasdoing.Thejanitorreplied:
"Mr.President,I'mhelpingputamanonthemoon".
"
Purposeisthatsensethatwearepartofsomethingbiggerthanourselves,thatweareneeded,thatwehavesomethingbetteraheadtoworkfor.Purposeiswhatcreatestruewehavesomethingbetteraheadtoworkfor.Purposeiswhatcreatestruehappiness.
You'regraduatingatatimewhenthisisespeciallyimportant.Whenourparentsgraduated,purposereliablycamefromyourjob,yourchurch,yourcommunity.Buttoday,technologyandautomationareeliminatingmanyjobs.Membershipincommunitiesisdeclining.Manypeoplefeeldisconnectedanddepressed,andaretryingtofillavoidintheirlives.
AsI'vetraveledaround,I'vesatwithchildreninjuveniledetentionandopioidaddicts,whotoldmetheirlivescouldhaveturnedoutdifferentlyiftheyjusthadsomethingtodo,anafterschoolprogramorsomewheretogo.I'vemetfactoryworkerswhoknowtheiroldjobsaren'tcomingbackandarejusttryingtofindtheirpathahead.
Foroursocietytokeepmovingforward,wehaveagenerationalchallenge:
tonotonlycreatenewjobs,butcreatearenewedsenseofpurpose.
IrememberthenightIlaunchedFacebookfromthatlittledorminKirklandHouse.IwenttoNoch'swithmyfriendKX.IremembertellinghimclearlythatwasexcitedtoconnecttheHarvardcommunity,butonedaysomeonewouldconnectthewholeworld.
Thethingis,itneverevenoccurredtomethatsomeonemightbeus.Wewerejustcollegekids.Wedidn'tknowanythingaboutthat.Therewereallthesebigtechnologycompanieswithallthisresources.Ijustassumedoneofthemwoulddoit.Butthisideawassocleartous--thatallpeoplewanttoconnect.Sowejustkeptworkingonit,dayafterday,afterday,afterday.
Iknowalotofyouwillhaveyourownstoriesjustlikethis.Achangeintheworldthatseemssoclearyou'resuresomeoneelseisgoingtodoit.Buttheywon't.Youwill.
Butit'snotenoughtohavepurposeyourself.Youhavetocreateasenseofpurposeforothers.
Andifoundthatoutthehardway。
Yousee,myhopewasnevertobuildacompany,buttomakeanimpact.Andasallthesepeoplestartedjoiningus,Ijustassumedthat'swhattheycaredabouttoo,soInevertookthetimetoexplainedwhatitwasthatIhopedwebuild.
Acoupleyearsin,somebigcompanieswantedtobuyus.Ididn'twanttosell.Iwantedtoseeifwecouldconnectmorepeople.WewerebuildingthefirstversionofNewsFeed,andIthoughtifwecouldjustlaunchthis,itcouldchangehowwelearnabouttheworld.
Nearlyeveryoneelsewantedtosell.Withoutasenseofhigherpurpose,thiswasthestartupdreamcometrue.Ittoreourcompanyapart.Afteroneparticularlytenseargument,oneofmycloseadvisortoldmeifIdidn'tagreetosellthecompanyrightnow,Iwouldregretthatdecisionfortherestofmylife.Relationshipsweresofrayedthatwithinayearorsoeverysinglepersononthemanagementteamwasgone.
ThatwasmyhardesttimeleadingFacebook.Ibelievedinwhatweweredoing,butIfeltalone.Andworse,itwasmyfault.IwonderedifIwasjustwrong,animposter,a22year-oldkidwhohadnoideahowthingsactuallyworked.
Now,yearslater,Iunderstandthat"is"howthingsworkwithnosenseofhigherpurpose.It'suptoallustocreateitsowecanallkeepmovingforwardtogether.
