USA'sparticipationinWorldWarⅡbroughtmajorchangestothelivesofAmerican
women.Beforethewar,therehadbeenahugepooloffemalelabour,consistinglargelyof

growntoover19.4million.Atonepointduringthosewars,morethan50percentofAmerican
womenworkedandby1945halfofallwomenworkerswereover35yearsold.
Womenwereparticularlyactiveinthedefenseindustries.Between1940and1944women
workinginenterprisesthatproducedgoodsincreasedby141percent.InDetroitin1943,\~'omen
madeup91percentofthenewhiringsin185warplants.Over10percentofallshipbuilders
werewomen.Mostofthesejobscamewitha"pink-slip"attached,aswomenunderstoodthat
theywouldbedismissedwhenthemenreturnedfromthewar.Womenwerealsofrustratedby
unfairpaydifferentials,formenwerepaidmoremoneyfordoingthesamejob.Withtheendof
thewarandarmymenbeingsenthome,womenwerereleasedtwiceasfastasmen.In1945,
three-quartersofthewomeninaircraftandshipbuildingwereletgo,andwomeninthecar
industrydecreasedfrom25percentt07percent.Althoughwomenfoundtheirworksatisfying
andliberating,postwarpublicityfocusedonwomen'sdutytohelpthereturningsoldiersfitin
withsocietyby"makinghimthemanofthehomeagain".Whenthewarended,manywomen

longerlocked.London'smournfulsilencewasbrokenbythenoiseofcartscarryingthedeadfor
burialinchurchesorpublicplaguepits.
Well-offresidentssoonfledtothecountryside,leavingthepoorbehindinpoorold
commun/ties.Thousandsofdogsandcatswerekilledtoremoveafearedsourceofcontagion
(传染),andpilesofrottinggarbagewereburned.Doctorscutswellingsandbledblackspotsin
attemptstocureplaguevictims.
PlagueOrdersprohibitedchurchesfromkeepingdeadbodiesintheirbuildingsduring
publicassembliesorservices,andcamersofthedeadhadtoidentifythemselvesandcouldnot

Inhisfamousdiary,SamuelPepys,amemberofParliament,conveyedthesadimageof
desperatepeoplewanderingthestreetsinsearchofrelieffromtheruinsoftheplague.Hisnotes
during1665indicatedtheseverityofLondon'sGreatPlague.InJuly,hemourned"thesadnews
ofthedeathofsomanvinthecommunity,fortylastnight,thebellalwaysgoingeitherfor

ByFebruary1666,theGreatPlaguehadnearlyrunitscourse.ltdiedoutduringtheGreat
Firethatsameyearandneverreturned.CentralpartsofLondonwererebuiltwithwiderstreets
torelievecrowdingandbetterwastewatersvstemstoimprovepubliccleanliness.NewPlague
OrderswereissuedinMay1666,whichbannedtheburialoffutureplaguevictimsinchurches
andsmallchurchyards,enforcedtheuseofquicklime(生石灰)atchosenburialsites,and
strictlyprohibitedopeninggraveslessthanoneyearafterburialasasafeguardagainstthe
