PassageFourteen（Pageants）

Pageantsareusuallyconceivedonafairlylargescale,oftenundertheauspicesofsomelocalorcivicauthorityoratanyrateinconnectionwithlocalgroupsofsomekind.Thissometimesmeansthatthereisanallocationoffundsavailableforthepurposeofmountingtheproduction,thoughunfortunatelythiswillusuallybefoundtobeonthemeagersideandmuchingenuitywillhavetobeusedtostretchitsothatallperformerscanbeadequatelyclothed.

Mostpageantshaveahistoricalflavourastheyusuallycomeaboutthroughthecelebrationoftheanniversaryofsomeeventofhistoricimportance,orthelifeordeathofsomelocalworthy.Researchamongarchivesandbooksinthepubliclibrarywillprobablyproveveryusefulandproducesomeworkableideaswhichwillgivetheproductionanespeciallylocalflavour.Fromthefirsteconomywillhavetobepracticedbecausethereareusuallyagreatnumberofpeopletodress.Leadingcharacterscanbeconsideredindividuallyinthesamewayaswhendesigningforaplay;butthemainbodyoftheperformerswillneedtobeplannedingroupsandthemassedeffectmustbealwaysborneinmind.

Manypageantstakeplaceindaylightintheopenair.Thisisanentirelydifferentproblemfromdesigningcostumeswhicharegoingtobelookedatunderartificiallighting;foronething,scenesviewedinthedaylightaresubjecttomanymoredistractions.Nolongeriseverythingaroundcutoutbythesurroundingdarkness,butinsteaditisveryeasytobeawareofdisturbingmovementintheaudienceofbehindtheperformers.Verytheatricallyconceivedclothesdonotalwayslooktheirbestwhenseeninadaylightsettingoftrees,verdantlawnsandoldivy-coveredwalls;thesamegoesforcostumesbeingworninfrontofthemellowcolorsofstatelyhomes.Thelocationneedstobestudiedandthenadecisioncanbemadeastowhatkindsofcolorsandtextureswillharmonizebestwiththesurroundingsandconditionsandthentocarrythisoutasfaraspossibleonthefundsavailable.
