harderscienceGCSEwillalsobeintroducedasanoptionalcourse.Oneexpertinvolvedin

devisingthenewsystembelievesitwillhalvethenumberofstateschoolpupilsstudying

"hard"science.Independentschoolsandmoretalentedpupilsinthestatesectorarelikely

toshunthenewpapersinfavouroftheGCSEsintheindividualsciencedisciplinesof

physics,chemistryandbiology.Thesewillcontinuetorequirepupilstoachievean

understandingofscientificprinciples.

ThenewexamsweredevisedafterproposalsbyacademicsatKing'sCollegeLondon,

whotoldministersthatsciencelessonswereoften"dullandboring"andrequiredpupilsto

recalltoomanyfacts.Theirreportsaid:

"Contemporaryanalysesofthelabourmarket

suggestthatourfuturesocietywillneedalargernumberofindividualswithabroader

understandingofsciencebothfortheirworkandtoenablethemtoparticipateascitizensin

ademocraticsociety."

However,ProfessorColinBlakemore,chiefexecutiveoftheMedicalResearch

Council,warnedthatreducingthe"hard"sciencetaughtinschoolswouldcreateproblems.

"Icanunderstandthegovernment'smotives,"hesaid."Thereisacrisisofpublic

confidenceinsciencewhichisreducingtheprogressofpolicyonsuchissuesasnuclear

energyandstemcellresearch.Butsixth-formersarealreadyarrivingatuniversitywithout

thedepthofknowledgerequired."Othersendorsethenewapproach.ResultsatNorth

ChaddertonupperschoolinOldham--~3neof80schoolspilotingthenew"softer"GCSE,

namedTw-entyfirstCenturyScience---haveimproved.MartynOvery,theheadofscience,

said:

"Theproportiongettinghighergradesinsciencewentupfrom60%to75%.The

coursekepttheirinterest,hadmoreprojectworkandwasmorerelevam."
