Afather’srelationshiptohischild’scurrentandfutureacademicsuccessisanimportantfactorwithsomeratherinterestingimplicationsthateducatorsarebeginningtostudyandestimate.Asamatteroffact,“lifewithfather”hasbeendiscoveredtobeaveryimportantfactorindeterminingachild’sprogressorlackofprogressinschool.

Arecentsurveyofover16,000childrenmadebytheNationalChildDevelopmentStudyinLondon,England,revealedthatchildrenwhosefatherscametoschoolconferencesandaccompaniedtheirchildrenonoutingsdidbetterinschoolsthandidthosechildrenwhosefatherswerenotinvolvedintheseactivities.Thestudymonitored(监测)childrenborninthesameweekinMarch,1958,fromthetimeoftheirbirththroughtheyearsoftheirearlyschooling.Itrevealedthatthechildrenofactivelyinvolvedfathersdidbetterinreadingandmaththandidchildrenwhoseonlyinvolvedparentwasthemother.Thepurposeofthestudywastoevaluatetheroleplayedbyfathersintheraisingofachild.Itindicatedamuchhigherlevelofparentalinvolvementbythefatherthanhadbeenexpected.Over66%ofthefathersweresaidtohaveplayedamajorroleinparentalresponsibility.
