Aqualifieddoctorwhorarelypracticedbutinsteaddevotedhislifetowriting.Heoncesaid:

“Medicineismylawfulwife,andliteratureismylover.”RussianwriterAntonPavlovichChekhov,wasagreatplaywrightandoneofthemastersofthemodernshortstory.

WhenChekhoventeredtheMoscowUniversityMedicalSchoolin1879,hestartedtopublishhundredsofcomicshortstoriestosupporthisfamily.Afterhegraduated,hewroteregularlyforalocaldailynewspaper.

Asawriterhewasextremelyfast,oftenproducingashortstoryinanhourorless.Chekhov’smedicalandscienceexperiencecanbeseenthroughtheindifference(冷漠)manyofhischaractersshowtotragicevents.In1892,hebecameafulltimewriterandpublishedsomeofhismostmemorablestories.

ChekhovoftenwroteaboutthesufferingsoflifeinsmalltownRussia.Tragiceventscontrolhischaracterswhoarefilledwithfeelingsofhopelessnessanddespair.

ItisoftensaidthatnothinghappensinChekhov’sstoriesandplays.Hemadeupforthiswithhisexcitingtechniquefordevelopingdramawithinhischaracters.Chekhov’sworkcombinedthecalmattitudeofascientistanddoctorwiththesensitivity(敏感)ofanartist.
