UPS’37PrinciplesforManagingPeople

Awide-ranginglookatthecompany’sworkforcemanagementpractices,includingpromotingfromwithinandlimitingtheemploymentofrelatives.

TheguidelinesbelowspelloutUPS’visionformanagingitsworkforce.They’repartofalarger"policybook"giventothecompany’smanagementteam,whichalsoincludesprinciplesforhandlingcustomersandshareholders.

WeBuildOurOrganizationAroundPeople

   Thestrengthofourcompanyisitspeople,workingtogetherwithacommonpurpose.Althoughmethods,equipment,andproceduresareimportant,andweconstantlystrivetoimprovethem,ourmostvaluableassetsareloyalandcapablepeople.

   Weseek,throughtheuseofourimpartialemploymentandpromotionpractices,tohaveadiverseworkforce.Ourorganizationisstrengthenedbycapableindividualswithdiversebackgrounds.

   Weassignresponsibilitiesanddutiestosecurethefullbenefitofanindividual’stalentsandabilitiesandtoprovideeachpersonwithanopportunitytodevelopfurther.

   Allourpeople,andthejobstheyperform,canmakeimportantcontributionstoourcompany.Wemaintainanenvironmentthatenablesthemtoobtainpersonalsatisfactionfromtheirwork.

WePlaceGreatValueonDiversity

   Wevaluethediversitythatexistswithinourworkforce,ourcustomers,thosewhoprovidegoodsandservicestoourcompany,andthecommunitiesinwhichwedobusiness.

   Managersareresponsibleforcreatingaworkplaceoffairness,dignity,andrespectforallemployees--anenvironmentofinclusion,encouragingparticipation,andthebesteffortofeveryone.Thediversityofourworkforceresultsfromasincereefforttohireandretaindedicatedpeoplefromthecommunitiesinwhichweoperate.

   Westrivetoenhanceourreputationasanorganizationthatvaluesdiversecustomersaswellassuppliersandvendors.Inaddition,wesupportandworkcloselywithorganizationsthatbelievefairemploymentpracticesareintegraltoasuccessfulbusiness.

WeTreatOurPeopleFairlyandWithoutFavoritism

   Webelievethatimpartialityisthefoundationofaloyal,cooperativeworkgroup.

   Wewanttotreatourpeopleasindividuals,withoutcausingtheperceptionofspecialtreatment.

   Wehavetheresponsibilitytoavoidanyrelationshipthatmayresultinactualorperceivedfavoritism.

WeMaintainanEnvironmentFreeofDiscriminationandSexualHarassment

   AllUPSemployeeshavetherighttoworkinanenvironmentfreeofanytypeofharassmentanddiscrimination.Sexualharassmentanddiscriminationwillnotbetolerated.

   ManagersandsupervisorsareresponsibleforensuringthattheyandtheiremployeesunderstandandcomplywithUPSguidelinesandmaintainaprofessionalworkenvironment.Thatresponsibilityincludesreportingincidentstotheappropriatemanagementpeople.

WeInsistUponIntegrityinOurPeople

   Weunderstandthatintegrityisfundamentaltohowwerunourbusinessandessentialtomaintaincompliancewithourpoliciesandlegalrequirements.Operatingwithintegritymeansweprovideanatmosphereinwhichourpeoplecanperformtheirjobsinanethicalmanner.Wepresentourcompanyhonestlytoemployeesand,inturn,expectthemtobehonestwithus.

   Weexpecthonestyfromourpeopleinalltheirduties,includingtheirhandlingofmoney,merchandise,andpropertywithwhichtheyareentrusted.Weinsistonintegrityinthepreparationandapprovalofallreports.

   Wealsoexpectourpeopletobehonestintheirassessmentofthemselves,suchasthetimeandcommitmenttheygivetotheirjobperformance,thefairnesstheyseekintheirdealingswithothers,ortheobjectivitytheyuseinevaluatingtheirowncontributions.

   Thegreatmajorityofourpeopleareofhighmoralcharacter.However,whenwedodiscoveradishonestpersoninourorganization,wedealwiththatindividualquicklyandfirmly.Forourcompanytobeknownforitsintegrity,eachoneofusmustmeethighstandards.

WePromoteFromWithin

   Generally,wefillmanagementpositionsfromwithinourorganization.Indoingsowetakecaretoincludeforconsiderationandnotoverlookqualifiedpeoplewhosepresentjobsmaymakethemlessnoticeablethanotheremployees.Wefillavacancyfromtheoutsidewhenwecannotlocateoneofourownpeoplewhohastheprofessionalortechnicalskillsrequiredforaparticularassignment.

   Advancementisbasedonindividualmeritandperformance.Allwhoperformtheirtaskscapablyandhavethecapacitytoassumegreaterresponsibilityareeligible.Observingequalopportunityguidelines,weselectthosewhoseembestfittedtotheposition.

   Allmanagersandsupervisorsareresponsibleforencouraginganddevelopingcapablepeople,notonlyfortheirowngroupsbutalsoforopeningselsewherewithinourorganization.Weactivelysearchforsuchcapablepeopleandgivethemopportunitiestosucceed.

WeMaintainaSpiritofTeamwork

   Throughoutourorganization,wecapitalizeontheadvantagesofworkingtogetherinaninformalmanner.Althoughdefinedresponsibilitiesareassignedtospecificindividualsinourcompany,weactasacooperativeteam.Combinedefforts,whichhelpanypartofourorganization,servetostrengthenourentireorganization.

WeCompensateOurPeopleFairly

   Ourcompensationprogramskeeppacewithtoday'schangingbusinessneedsandcomparefavorablywiththoseprogramsinothercompanies.Ouremployees’compensationincludesmorethansalaryalone.Whenconsideringpayrangesandnegotiatingwageagreements,weweighthevalueofthetotalcompensationpackage.Wealsoconsiderplansthatgiveparticipantsastakeinthefinancialsuccessofthecompanyandofferwaystoenhancesavings.

WePromotetheGoodHealthofOurPeople

   Weprovideabenefitspackageandotherprogramsthathelppromotegoodhealthandwell-beingamongemployeesandtheirfamilies.Attentiontoemployeehealthincreasesthesafetyofouroperationsandreducesthecostsofinjuriesandillnesses.

WeTransferManagementPeopletoMeetOurCompany'sNeedsasWellastoBroadenTheirExperience

   Oneofourlong-standingstrengthsisthewillingnessofourpeopletotakejobassignmentswhereneeded.Movesintendedtostrengthenourorganizationmayinvolvepromotions,lateralassignments,transfersorrelocations.Assignmentchangesshouldbeconsideredwiththeviewofenhancingcareeropportunities.

   Becausewerealizethattransfershaveprofoundeffectsonindividualsandtheirfamiliesaswellasthecompany,wecarefullyconsideralltransfersandneverundertakethemlightly.

   Weknowthatmostofourfuturemanagementpeoplewillcomefromwithinourorganization.Forthatreason,welookforapplicantswhocanprogressbeyondtheimmediatejob.Wealsoneedpeoplewhocanqualifyandbecomeskilledattheirworkwithoutnecessarilyaspiringtomoreresponsiblejobs.

   Oneofthemostimportantresponsibilitiesofmanagersandsupervisorsisthedevelopmentofpeople.Weareresponsibleforseeingthatallpeopleinourimmediateorganizationarefullypreparedtoperformtheirjobswell.

   Throughoursupport,coaching,counselingandexample,weexpectpeopletodeveloptheknowledgeandskillsthatarenecessaryforsuccessintheircurrentjobsandwhichcanhelpthemassumepositionsofgreaterresponsibility.Weexpectthemtotakeadvantageofthetrainingavailabletothemfromthecompanyandfromoutsidesources.Inturn,weprovidepeoplewithassignmentsandopportunitiesthatallowthemtodemonstratetheirskillsanddeveloptheircapabilities.

   Weseektogivepeopleassignmentsforwhichtheyarewell-suited.

WeExpectOurManagersandSupervisorstoTrainTheirPeople

   Weconducttrainingschools,workshops,andotherprogramsinordertomeettheneedsofourpeople.However,itistheresponsibilityofourmanagementteamtoensurethattheirpeoplereceiveallthenecessarytrainingandthatitiseffective.Wereviewtrainingregularlytoseethatitisrelevanttoourcurrentneeds.

WeHoldFrequentEvaluationsWithOurEmployeesAboutTheirPerformance

   Reviewsofeachperson'sperformanceenableustoarriveatamutualunderstandingaboutprogresstowardmeetinggoalsandobjectives.

   Weholdformalevaluationsperiodically.However,thereisnosubstitutefordailyandweeklyfeedbackoneachperson'sperformance.

   Wefollowupontheresultsofallevaluationstoensurethecontinueddevelopmentofourpeople.

WeHaveMeaningfulDiscussionsWithOurPeople

   Cooperationandteamworkamongallourpeoplearenecessaryforthecontinuedsuccessofourbusiness.Tofosterthisspirit,weseektodevelopmeaningfulbusinesslikerelationshipsandbettercommunicationsbyhavingregularandfrequentplannedindividualandgroupdiscussions.

WeRecognizeAccomplishments

   Ourpeopledeserverecognitionforaccomplishmentsintheirregularjobsandforcontributionsmadetootherdepartmentsandoperations.Theyalsodeserverecognitionfortheextraefforttheymaketosatisfycustomersandfortheirparticipationineffortsthatbenefittheircommunities.

   Allmanagersandsupervisorsareresponsibleforrecognizingtheaccomplishmentsofpeopleintheirowngroups.Ourestablishedprogramsareintendedtoensurethatdeservingemployeesarerecognizedappropriatelyfortheiraccomplishments.Theseprograms,however,donotreplacetheimportantroleofthemanagerorsupervisorinemployeerecognition.
