CharlieChaplinwasoneofthegreatestandmostwidelylovedsilentmovie（无声电影）stars.FromEasyStreet（1917）toModernTimes（1936），hemademanyofthefunniestandmostpopularfilmsofhistime.Hewasbestknownforhischaracter“thelittletramp”．Itisthiskind－heartedcharacterthatweconnectwiththetimeofsilentmovies.

BorninLondonin1889，ChaplinfirstvisitedAmericawithatheatrecompanyin1907.AppearingasBillyintheplaySherlockHolmes，youngChaplintouredthecountrytwice.Onhissecondtour，hemetMackSennettandwassigned（签署；签名）toKeystoneStudiostoactinfilms.

ChaplinwasknownasoneofthemostdemandingmeninHollywood.Heperformedlotsofcomedies（喜剧）inhislifetime.Nomatterhowbigorsmallofthepart，Chaplinwalkedeachactorthrougheveryscene.Chaplinknewthatasuccessfulscenewasn'tsimplyaboutthestar，butabouteveryoneonthescreen.Herequiredthatalltheactorsandactressesworktogetherineveryperformance.Theonlyway

toachievethatunity（团结）wastokeepcompletecontrolovereveryscene.Ashebecamemorepopular，heusedmoreandmoreoriginalanddifficultfilmingtechniques.Moviessuchashis1925hit，TheGoldRush，requiredunendingreworkingofscenesandrebuildingofsets.
