Whenitwasannouncedin2018thattheChineseAcademyofSciencesinShanghaihadcreatedtheworld'sfirstclonedmonkeys,ZhongzhongandHuahua,heateddiscussionsfollowedonline.Infact,cloninghasalwaysbeenwithus.Itisawayofmakinganexactcopyofanotheranimalorplant.Ithappensinplantswhengardenerstakecuttingsfromgrowingplantstomakenewones.Italsohappensinanimalswhenidenticaltwinsareproducedfromthesameegg.Thesearebothexamplesofnaturalclones.
Cloninghastwomajoruses.First,gardenersuseittoproducelargequantitiesofplantsforsale.Second,itisvaluableforresearchonnewplantspeciesandformedicalresearchonanimals.Cloningplantsisfairlystraightforward,whilecloninganimalsismuchmorecomplicatedanddifficult.Overtheyears,manyscientistsfailedintheirattemptstocloneanimals,buttheirdeterminationandpatiencepaidoffin1996withabreakthrough—thecloningofDollythesheep.
Thesheepcloningprocedureworkslikethis:

Thenucleusisremovedfromtheeggcell.
Theeggcellisreadyforanewnucleus.
FemalesheepBprovidesasomaticcell(体细胞)fortheclone.Thenucleusofthiscellcontainsallthegenesneededtoproduceanewsheep.Thenucleusistakenoutofthesomaticcell.
Withtheadvancesofscientificresearch,cloningwillhaveseveralmajorusesinthefuture.Foronething,itcouldbeusedtobreedanimalspecieswhichareendangered,orevenbringbackspecieswhicharenowextinct.Foranother,itcouldbeusedtogrowhumanorgansortissueinanimals,whichcouldbeusedforhumanorgantransplantsormedicaltreatments.Finally,cloningcouldbeusedtobreedanimalsthatwillprovideuswithhigherqualitymeat,milk,oreggs.
Whiletherearetechnicalissuesthatneedtobeworkedthroughtomakewidespreadcloningpossible,thebiggestconcernsaremoral.Forexample,ifscientistsbroughtanextinctanimalbackintoexistence,itwouldprobablyenduplivinginazoo.Thatisnotverygoodfortheanimal.Evenworsefortheanimalisusingitasasourceoforgantransplants—becauseitwillbeinjuredorevendie.Inaddition,manypeopleworrythateatinganimalproductsthatresultfromcloningmightbeharmfultoourhealthovertime.Thepossibilityofusingcloningtoproducehumanbeingsisanevenbiggerconcern.Whatwouldhappenifsuchknowledgeendedupinthewronghands?
