Letusknowhowthesepeoplehavehelpedtomakeadifferenceinyoureyes.

ThepersonIrespectmostisthegeophysicistHuangDanian,whohelpedChinatomakemanytechnologicaladvances.

Huangwasaremarkablescientist.HehadstudiedandworkedinBritainfor18years,butwhenhefeltthathiscountryneededhim,hegaveuphiswell-paidjobandreturnedtoChina.Overthenextsevenyears,Huangworkedtodevelopmanydevicesneededfordeep-seaexploration.

Unfortunately,suchachievementsdidn'tcomecheap.Duetothefranticpaceofhisresearch,Huangwasabsentfromhisfather'sfuneral,andevenhisowncancerwentundetectedashehadnotimetoseeadoctor.Tosumup,Huangsacrificedeverythingforhisresearch,andIthinkmorepeopleshouldhonourhim.

NowandthenIhavetestedmyseeingfriendstodiscoverwhattheysee.RecentlyIaskedafriend,whohadjustreturnedfromalongwalkinthewoods,whatshehadobserved,“Nothinginparticular,”shereplied.

Howwasitpossible,Iaskedmyself,towalkforanhourthroughthewoodsandseenothingworthyofnote?

Iwhocannotseefindhundredsofthingstointerestmethroughmeretouch.Ifeelthedelicatesymmetryofaleaf.Ipassmyhandslovinglyaboutthesmoothskinofasilverbirch,ortherough,shaggybarkofapine.InspringItouchthebranchesoftreeshopefullyinsearchofabud,thefirstsignofawakeningNatureafterherwinter'ssleep.Occasionally,ifIamveryfortunate,Iplacemyhandgentlyonasmalltreeandfeelthehappyquiverofabirdinfullsong.

Attimesmyheartcriesoutwithlongingtoseeallthesethings.IfIcangetsomuchpleasurefrommeretouch,howmuchmorebeautymustberevealedbysight.AndIhaveimaginedwhatIshouldmostliketoseeifIweregiventheuseofmyeyes,sayforjustthreedays.

Onthefirstday,Ishouldwanttoseethepeoplewhosekindnessandcompanionshiphavemademylifeworthliving.Idonotknowwhatitistoseeintotheheartofafriendthroughthat“windowofthesoul"',theeye.Icanonly“see"throughmyfingertipstheoutlineofaface.Icandetectlaughter,sorrow,andmanyotherobviousemotions.Iknowmyfriendsfromthefeeloftheirfaces.

Forinstance,canyoudescribeaccuratelythefacesoffivedifferentfriends?

Useyoureyesasiftomorrowyouwouldbestrickenblind.Andthesamemethodcanbeappliedtotheothersenses.Hearthemusicofvoices,thesongofabird,themightystrainsofanorchestra,asifyouwouldbestrickendeaftomorrow.Toucheachobjectasiftomorrowyourtactilesensewouldfail.Smelltheperfumeofflowers,tastewithrelisheachmorsel,asiftomorrowyoucouldneversmellandtasteagain.Makethemostofeverysense;gloryinallthefacetsofpleasureandbeauty,whichtheworldrevealstoyouthroughtheseveralmeansofcontactwhichNatureprovides.Butofallthesenses,Iamsurethatsightmustbethemostdelightful.

WHEREISITLEADINGUS?

Whenitwasannouncedin2018thattheChineseAcademyofSciencesinShanghaihadcreatedtheworld'sfirstclonedmonkeys,ZhongzhongandHuahua,heateddiscussionsfollowedonline.Infact,cloninghasalwaysbeenwithus.Itisawayofmakinganexactcopyofanotheranimalorplant.Ithappensinplantswhengardenerstakecuttingsfromgrowingplantstomakenewones.Italsohappensinanimalswhenidenticaltwinsareproducedfromthesameegg.Thesearebothexamplesofnaturalclones.

Cloninghastwomajoruses.First,gardenersuseittoproducelargequantitiesofplantsforsale.Second,itisvaluableforresearchonnewplantspeciesandformedicalresearchonanimals.Cloningplantsisfairlystraightforward,whilecloninganimalsismuchmorecomplicatedanddifficult.Overtheyears,manyscientistsfailedintheirattemptstocloneanimals,buttheirdeterminationandpatiencepaidoffin1996withabreakthrough—thecloningofDollythesheep.

Thesheepcloningprocedureworkslikethis:

FemalesheepAprovidesaneggcell.

Thenucleusisremovedfromtheeggcell.

Theeggcellisreadyforanewnucleus.

FemalesheepBprovidesasomaticcell(体细胞)fortheclone.Thenucleusofthiscellcontainsallthegenesneededtoproduceanewsheep.Thenucleusistakenoutofthesomaticcell.

Withtheadvancesofscientificresearch,cloningwillhaveseveralmajorusesinthefuture.Foronething,itcouldbeusedtobreedanimalspecieswhichareendangered,orevenbringbackspecieswhicharenowextinct.Foranother,itcouldbeusedtogrowhumanorgansortissueinanimals,whichcouldbeusedforhumanorgantransplantsormedicaltreatments.Finally,cloningcouldbeusedtobreedanimalsthatwillprovideuswithhigherqualitymeat,milk,oreggs.

Whiletherearetechnicalissuesthatneedtobeworkedthroughtomakewidespreadcloningpossible,thebiggestconcernsaremoral.Forexample,ifscientistsbroughtanextinctanimalbackintoexistence,itwouldprobablyenduplivinginazoo.Thatisnotverygoodfortheanimal.Evenworsefortheanimalisusingitasasourceoforgantransplants—becauseitwillbeinjuredorevendie.Inaddition,manypeopleworrythateatinganimalproductsthatresultfromcloningmightbeharmfultoourhealthovertime.Thepossibilityofusingcloningtoproducehumanbeingsisanevenbiggerconcern.Whatwouldhappenifsuchknowledgeendedupinthewronghands?

Whenitcomestocloning,wewonder,ultimately,whethercloningwillhelporharmtheworld.Nodoubt,wewillbetalkingaboutthisquestionforalongtimetocome.
