TheLP3983HisdesignedforportableRFandwirelessapplicationswithdemandingperformanceandspacerequirements.TheLP3983Hperformanceisoptimizedforbattery-poweredsystemstodeliverultralownoiseandlowquiescentcurrent.Regulatorgroundcurrentincreasesonlyslightlyindropout,furtherprolongingthebatterylife.TheLP3983Halsoworkswithlow-ESRceramiccapacitors,reducingtheamountofboardspacenecessaryforpowerapplications,criticalinhand-heldwirelessdevices.TheLP3983Hconsumeslessthan0.01µAinshutdownmodeandhasfastturn-ontimelessthan50µs.Theotherfeaturesincludeultralowdropoutvoltage,highfeedbackaccuracy,currentlimitingprotection,andhighripplerejectionratio.Itisavailableinthe5-leadofSOT23-5andSOT89-5packages.

Likeanylow-dropoutregulator,theexternalcapacitorsusedwiththeLP3983Hmustbecarefullyselectedforregulatorstabilityandperformance.Usingacapacitorwhosevalueis>2µFontheLP3983Hinputandtheamountofcapacitancecanbeincreasedwithoutlimit.Theinputcapacitormustbelocatedadistanceofnotmorethan0.5inchfromtheinputpinoftheICandreturnedtoacleananalogground.Thereisaspecialattentionwhichistheinputcapacitanceshouldnotbelessthanoutputcapacitance.Anygoodqualityceramicortantalumcanbeusedforthiscapacitor.ThecapacitorwithlargervalueandlowerESR(equivalentseriesresistance)providesbetterPSRRandline-transientresponse.TheoutputcapacitormustmeetbothrequirementsforminimumamountofcapacitanceandESRinallLDOsapplication.TheLP3983HisdesignedspecificallytoworkwithlowESRceramicoutputcapacitorinspace-savingandperformanceconsideration.Usingaceramiccapacitorwhosevalueisatleast1µFwithESRis>25mΩontheLP3983Houtputensuresstability.TheLP3983HstillworkswellwithoutputcapacitorofothertypesduetothewidestableESRrange.Outputcapacitoroflargercapacitancecanreducenoiseandimproveloadtransientresponse,stability,andPSRR.Theoutputcapacitorshouldbelocatednotmorethan0.5inchfromtheVOUTpinoftheLP3983Handreturnedtoacleananalogground.

TheLP3983HfeaturesanLDOregulatorenable/disablefunction.ToassuretheLDOregulatorwillswitchon,theENturnoncontrollevelmustbegreaterthan1.4voltsbutnotaboveVin+0.3V.TheLDOregulatorwillgointotheshutdownmodewhenthevoltageontheENpinfallsbelow0.4volts.Forprotectingthesystem,theLP3983Hhaveaquick-dischargefunction.Iftheenablefunctionisnotneededinaspecificapplication,itmaybetiedtoVINtokeeptheLDOregulatorinacontinuouslyonstate.
FeedbackCapacitorandVoltage
Foradjustableversion,connectinga22pFbetweenoutputpinandFBpinsignificantlyreducesoutputvoltageripple,itiscriticalthatthecapacitorconnectionshouldbedirectandPCBtracesshouldbeasshortaspossible.

ThermalprotectionlimitspowerdissipationinLP3983H.Whentheoperationjunctiontemperatureexceeds150°C,theOTPcircuitstartsthethermalshutdownfunctionturnthepasselementoff.Thepasselementturnsonagainafterthejunctiontemperaturecoolsby30°C.Forcontinueoperation,donotexceedabsolutemaximumoperationjunctiontemperature125°C.
Thepowerdissipationdefinitionindeviceis:
PD=(VIN−VOUT)xIOUT+VINxIQ
ThemaximumpowerdissipationdependsonthethermalresistanceofICpackage,PCBlayout,therateofsurroundingsairflowandtemperaturedifferencebetweenjunctionandambient.
Themaximumpowerdissipationcanbecalculatedbyfollowingformula:
PD(MAX)=(TJ(MAX)−TA)/θJA
Where
TJ(MAX)isthemaximumoperationjunctiontemperature125°C,TAistheambienttemperatureandtheθJAisthejunctiontoambientthermalresistance.ForrecommendedoperatingconditionsspecificationofLP3983H,where
