TobiasWolffwasborninAlabamain1945.Hisparentsdivorcedwhenhewasaboy.Wolff’smotherretainedcustodyofhim.Asachild,Wolfftraveledwithhismother,Rosemary,tothePacificNorthwest,wheresheremarried.GrowingupinthePacificNorthwest,youngTobiassoonwasforcedtoendurelifeunderhisstrictandcruelstepfather.Hiseffortstogetawayfromhisstepfatherledtohisself-transformation.ThatperiodofWolff’slifeisrecountedinThisBoy’sLife:
AMemoir,whichwaslatermadeintoafilm.HeliveswithhisfamilyinupstateNewYorkandteacheswritingatSyracuseUniversity.
From1964through1968,Wolffservedasalieutenant(陆军中尉)withthe.ArmySpecialForces(GreenBerets)inVietnam.HelaterrecountedhiswartimeexperiencesinthememoirInthePharaoh’sArmy:
