Insteadofleavingtheharshenvironmentaftercompletingthehistoricadventure,theexplorersetupatentontheworld’slargesticesheetandwaitedpatientlyforRuddtocompletethegreatundertaking.OnDecember29,justthreedaysafterO’Bradyarrived,theBritishexplorerfinishedhisadventure,becomingtheworld’ssecondpersontocompletethesolocasingofthefrozencontinent.

Ruddwasnotdisappointedatbeingsecondsinceheneverconsideredittobea“race”.Besides,the49-year-oldBritishArmyCaptainhadamoreselflessmotiveforattemptingthefeat.HewasdoingitinmemoryofhisfriendHenryWorsley,whohadintroducedhimtopolarexploration.ThedisasterhappenedwhileWorsleywastryingtocrossthecontinentalonein2016.Ruddsaid,“Ididn’twanttogetdrawnintoarace.AllthatmatteredtomewasthatIcompletedit,andthatIskiedsoloandunsupported,carryingthetagwithHenry’snameonit.”

Althoughtheyflewmoreoftentoanemptycardthantoonethathadonesymbolonit,itbecameeasierforthemtodistinguishwhenthesymbolsonthecardincreasedinnumber.Forexample,theymoreoftenflewtothezerowhentheothercardhadfoursymbolsthanwhenithadone.
