1PreparingtoUseWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011

1.1Introduction

WelcometoWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011.ThislabmanualisaguidetohelpyouuseandevaluateWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011.Inadditiontopreparationsteps,suchastoolkitinstallation,thismanualincludeslabsforkeyscenariossuchasbuildinganimage,deployinganimageandservicinganimage.

Thelabsaremosteasilyfollowedintheorderpresented.YoucanalsochoselabsindividuallybasedonyourinterestsandpreviousexperiencewithWindowsEmbedded,butpleasenotethatseverallabscenariosassumeyouhavetheoutputofanearlierlabscenario.

Althougheveryattempthasbeenmadetoprovideworkaroundsandadditionalusagenotesforscenariosthatareaffectedbyknownissuesinthepre-releaseversionsofWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011,westronglyrecommendthatyourefertothereleasenotesprovidedwiththisreleasebeforebeginninganyofthelabsdescribedinthismanual.

1.5InstallWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011Toolkit

YoucaninstallWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011ToolkitonyourdevelopmentcomputerfromaDVDorfromsetupfilesdownloadedfromMicrosoftConnect.

1.RunSetup.exe

IfyouhavetheWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011ToolkitDVD,installationshouldbeginwhenyouinserttheDVDintotheDVDdrive.Ifitdoesn’tstartautomatically,theSetup.exefilecanbefoundat:

2.OntheSetupTypepage,dooneofthefollowing:

ToaccesstheWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011ToolkitHelp:

1.StartImageConfigurationEditoronyourdevelopmentcomputer

FromtheStartmenu,clickPrograms,clickWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011,andthenclickImageConfigurationEditor.

2.Onthetoolbar,clicktheHelpicontolaunchHelp.

1.6CreateaUtilityDrive

IfyourdeviceisabletobootfromaDVD,youcanusetheWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011DVDappropriatetoyourdevice’sarchitecturetoinstalltheOSimagedirectlytoyourdevice.

OtherwiseyoucancreateabootableUSBdrivebyusingtheDiskParttoolandthenloadingtheUSBDrivewithImageBuilderWizard（IBW）orWindowsPreinstallationEnvironment（WinPE）.DiskpartsupportsthepartitioningandformattingofaUSBFlashDevice（UFD）asabootabledevice.AUSBdrivewithaminimumof4GBisrecommendedforautilitydriveloadedwithImageBuilderWizard.

1.6.1MakeYourUtilityDiskBootable

3.AttachyourUSBdrivetoyourdevelopmentcomputer.

4.FromaWindowsVista,Windows7orWindowsPreinstallation（WindowsPE）3.0environment,runtheDiskParttoolbytypingthefollowingatacommandprompt:

Note:

TheversionoftheDiskParttoolprovidedbyWindowsVista,Windows7andWindowsPE2.0,2.1and3.0supportsthepartitioningandformattingofaUFDasabootabledevice.PreviousversionsoftheDiskParttool,includingtheversionprovidedbyWindowsXP,donotfullysupportpartitioningandformattingaUFDtobebootableandshouldnotbeused.

5.UsetheDiskParttooltodeterminethedisknumberanddevicesizetobeusedforthenextstepbytypingthefollowingattheDiskPartprompt:

6.UsetheDiskParttooltopartitionandformatthedriveandmakeitbootable.AttheDiskPartprompt,typethefollowing,replacingwiththedisknumberoftheUSBdrive:

1.6.2AddImageBuilderWizardtoYourUtilityDisk

TheImageBuilderWizarddisksprovidetheabilitytoquicklygenerateanewIBWdiskintheeventIBWhasbeenservicedornewpackageshavebeenaddedtothedistributionshare.

TogenerateanImageBuilderWizardDisk:

7.StartImageConfigurationEditoronyourdevelopmentcomputer

FromtheStartmenu,selectPrograms,selectWindowsEmbeddedStandard2011,thenselectImageConfigurationEditor.

8.OntheToolsmenu,selectMediaCreation,thenselectCreateIBWDisk

9.Enterthedesireddistributionsharetobecopied.

10.SelectyourUSBdriveasthetargetfolder.

11.Selectthedesireddiskarchitecture.

12.ClickOK.

Insomeinstances,youmaywanttocreateautilitydiskthatincludestheWindowsPreinstallationEnvironment（WindowsPE）.WindowsPEisalightweightversionofWindowsusedmainlyfordeployment.YoumayprefertouseWindowsPEinsteadofImageBuilderWizardifyourUSBdriveissmallerthan2GB,ifyouhavespacelimitationsonyourdeviceorifyourdevicerequirescustomdriversthatyouwillinstallonacustomversionofWindowsPE.
