1.Preface
Duetotheimportanceofreadingcomprehensionamongthefourbasicforeignsecondlanguageacquisitionskills,considerableattentionhasbeenpaidtothepedagogicapproachofimprovingreadingproficienecyofreaders.Readingcomprehensionisaninterdisciplinaryarea.Mainstreamresearchesonreadingcomprehensionanalysisaremainlyfromapsycholinguisticperspective,schematicperspective,andSLAperspective.Althoughthesedifferentperspeectiveshaveledtoouroverallunderstandingthenatureofreadingcomprehensionproeess,thequestionofhowtocarryouttheprocessofreadingandachievesueeessfulreadingisstillfarfrombeingcomplete.RelevanceTheory(RT)proposedbySperberandWilson(1995),asacommunicativetheoryofcognitivepragmatics,isdedicatedtothestudiesoftheostensive一inferentialcommunicationandorientedtoestablishageneralprincipleofinterpretingsuccessufllytheinnermechnaismofhumancommunication.Ithasbeenwidelyappliedtoanalyzingstylisticfeatures,translation,syntax,discourse,mediadiscourseandsoon.ThethesisisanattempttoexpoundthereadingcomprehensionprocessandwishtoexploreaneffectivereadingmodelintheRTfrmaeworktoapplytotheteachingofEnglishreading.FromtheperspectiveofRT,theaimofreadingcomprehensionistoobtainthewriter’sintendedmeaning.Readingisregardedasanostensive一inferentialcommunication,whichisapsycholinguisticprocess:
readersstartwithasetoflinguisticsymbols(ostensivestimuli)thathavebeenchosenbywriterstorepresentthethoughtthattheywishtoexpress;itendswhenreadershaveinteprertedasmuchofthewriter’sintendedmenaingasisrelevancetothembyinference.Readersfollowageneralprincple一searchforoptimalrelevance,inthewholeprocessactively.Therefore,howtosearchtheoptimalrelevantinformationbymeansofinferencetoformcontextualeffectswithinlimitedtimeisthekeytoimprovetheefficiencyofreadingcomprehension.
Inthispaper,thethesisreviewsthecontentsandfunctionofboththestudiesofEnglishReadingComprehension(ERC)andtheRelevanceTheory(RT).RelevanceTheoryisatheorywidelyusedinthefieldofthetranslationresearchaswellasthediscussingontheconununicatingprocessbetweenthespeakersandthelistenersinspokenlanguage:
itisseldomusedbyexpertsinEnglishtextualreadingcomprehension.Althoughthereareafewresearchpapersthatfocusonthesubject,combineERCandRTtogether,butmostofthethesesjuststopthesurfacerelationshipbetweenthem,butnotdeeplydigthecombinationbetweenthem.Someisevenjustabriefintroductiontothemormerelyaliteraturereview.ThisthesissupportsanewpossibleapplicationofOptimalRelevanceTheoryinreadingcomprehension.Afteradetaileddiscussiononsomeconnectedtheories(suchascommunicativeprinciple,cognitiveapproach,ete.),theauthormakesverydetailedquestionnaires;withthedown一to一earthattitude,wegettheconclusionthatonecangetabetterunderstandingaboutacertaintopicifhehasmoreknowledgethatothers,andsuchNVIcanbeenlargedanddevelopedbyconscioustrainingareproved,aconclusionisreached.Thethesisgivessomeimportantsignificancenotonlytothereaders,buttotheteachers.ThestudyofthecombinationoftheOptimalRelevanceandthetextreadinggivesnotonlyaviewofthestrategiesforEnglishtextreading,butalsoexeavatesanewapplicationofRelevanceTheory.
1.IntroductionofEnglishreadinganalysisandcomprehension
EnglishtextreadingisthemostimportantpartofthefourEnglishleamingskillstoallthenon一nativeleamers.Anadvancedproficiencylevelsinaseeondlanguage,theabilitytoreadthewrittenlanguageatareasonablerateandwithgoodcomprehensionhaslongbeenrecgnizedasanimportantoralskills,butmanylearnersseemstohavesomedifficulitiesintheanalysisandcomprehensionofEnglishtextsreading.ThepaperfocusesonEnglishtextreadingintheclassroom,thereadabletextsintextbooksorinsomekindsoftests,whichisapplicabletomostlearnersandteachers.
1.1Whatisthereading?
AccordingtoAnderson,readingistheprocessofconstructingmeaningfromwrittentexts.Itisacomplexskillrequiringthecoordinationofnumberofinterrelatedsourcesofinformation.Mostedueatorandscholarsagreethatreadingisoneofimportantelementsinhumansociallife,animportantmeansofgettingknowledgeandpereeivingtheworldafundamentalwayofstudying.Readingisanactiveinformationseekingproeessinwhichreadersrelateinformationinthetexttowhattheyalreadyknow,soreadingisaninteraetionbetweenthewriterandthereader.Whenthereaderssitdowntoread,theirknowledgeofthelanguageallowsthemtoidentifythebasisformsandmeaningsofprintedwordsandsentences.Atthesametime,theirknowledgeoftheworldingeneralandofthesubjectmatterinparticularallowsthemtocomprehendthesewordsandsentencesbycomparingthemtoknowledgestoredintheirbrain.Goodreadersreadformeaning:
theydonotwastetimedecodingeachletteroreachwordinthetext.Instead,theytakeinwholechunksofthetextrelyingontheirknowledgeofthelanguageandofthesubject,mattertomakepredictionsastowhatislikelyfollowandtointerpretwhatismeant.

1.2.1ReadingComprehensionasaCommunieatingfunctionbetweenthewritersandreaders
Intheinieraction,thewritercomposedthecontentandwordingofthetextinserviceoftheirsocialandcommunicativegoals,whilethereaderattemptstorecoverandreconstructtheintendedmessageandthewriter’sgoalsduringcomprehension.Inotherwords,itisacommunicatingprocessbetweenthewritersandthereaders,codes(information)aretransferredbyreadingmaterials,anditisbothanencodinganddeeodingway.Thatistosay,readingisaechievedbythewriter’sencodingmeaninginawrittentextandbythereader’sdecodingthetexttomeaning.Obviouslythecodemodelistoosimple,butreadingcomprehensioninvolvesmorethanthesimpleproeessofreeognizingtheletters,words,phrasesandelauses.Readingcomprehensionhasbeenregardedasapsyehologicalprocesswhichstartswithalinguisticrepresentationencodedbythewriter(eneoder)andtheendswiththemeaningthatthereaderconstructs.Firstly,thewriter

1.2.2ReadingComprehensionasaInferencefunctionfromthecommunication
Becauseofsomedifficultyinexpresscompletelyintentionofwriter,sothewritercann’twriteeverythinginthetextandusuallyomittheirexplanationsandinformationthattheythinkthereaderswillbeabletosupply.Whenthereadersknowasmuchasormoreinformationthanthewriterswrite,thecommunicationbetweenthemwillbeachievedeasily.Theminimumrequirementisthattheyshouldshareasamecode.Butsometimessincethewritersthinkthatthereadersmusthavesomethingincommonwiththeirs,theytakeforgrantedandomitmoreinformationthanwhatthereaderknow.Butmeanwhileforthosewhosharelessincommonwiththewritersthereadercann’tcompletelythewriter’sintention,nowthereadershavetomakereferencebyusingtheverticalinformationaswellasthenon-verticalinformationfromtheirownbackgroundtodrawconclusionaboutthemeaning.Somakinginferencemeansformingopinionsofthewriter’intentionbasedonnotonlywhatisdircetlystatedbutalsoonwhatisindircetlysuggestedorimplied,sothereadershavetoputthepiecesofinformationtogethertodrawreasonableinference.
1.2.3ReadingComprehensionasaFunctionofSeekingOptimalRelevance
