Today,traditionalmedicineandtreatmentsarenotonlyusedindevelopingcountries,butareincreasinginpopularityinNorthAmericaandEurope.IntheUnitedKingdom,forexample,$230millionsisspentontraditionalremediesannually.InChina,traditionalherbalmedicinesaccountforthirtytofiftypercentofallmedicinesused.Theglobalmarketfortraditionalmedicinesisestimatedtobe$60billion,andgrowingeveryyear.
Twenty-fivepercentofmodernmedicinesaremadefromplantsthatwerefirstusedintraditionalmedicine,andscientistsbelievetheyhavejustscratchedthesurface.Forexample,oneChineseherbalremedy,whichhasbeenusedfortwothousandyears,hasrecentlybeenfoundtobeeffectiveagainstvarietiesofmalariathathaveresistancetootherdrugs.Thisherbcouldendupsavingamillionlivesayear,mostlyamongchildren.InSouthAfrica,anothertraditionalplantisbeingusedtotreatpatientswithAIDS.
Recognizingtheimportanceoftraditionalmedicines,in2003WHOlaunchedaTraditionalMedicineStrategy.Amongtherecommendationsofthisstrategy,therewereseveralareasofconcern.Thefirstareaofconcernissafety.WHOrecommendsmorescientifictestingontraditionalmedicine—notalltraditionalmedicinesareashelpfulasthetwomentionedabove,andsomecanactuallybeharmful.
Forexample,intheUnitedStates,atraditionalChineseherb,MaHuang,wassoldasadietdrug.Itwastoblameformanyheartattacksandatleastadozendeaths.InBelgium,atleastseventypeoplereceivedliverdamagewhentheytookherbalremedymadefromthewrongspeciesofplant.
