Thatsaid,thetrue“BestCompaniestoWorkFor”havetherightcultureandaren’tjustgreatworkplaces.
”
Fortuneitselfisawareofthis,evenassigningoneofitstopwriterstoarguethatbeinga“BestCompanytoWorkFor”haslittletodowiththejaw-dropping(andmouth-watering–tryingbitingintoGoogle’slavenderpecancornbread)employeeperkstheseorganizationsoffer.
“Knockoutperksaren’tthereasonanycompanymakesthislist,”writesFortune’sGeoffColvin.“Theessenceofagreatworkplaceisjustthat:
anessence,anindispensablequalitythatdeterminesitscharacter.”
”
Personally,I’malwaysthrilledtoseethe“BestCompanies”list.IneverstopbeingimpressedthatapublicationlikeFortune,whichfordecadeshastrackedcompaniesbasedon“howmuch”(revenue,marketcapitalization,etc.),alsomakessuchasustainedefforttomeasurethemorehumanvirtuesofworkplacequality.

MerriamWebster’s2014“WordoftheYear”–themostsearchedtermonthedictionary’swebsite–was“culture.”Examiningcultureisdeeplytiedtothecurrentmoment.Why?

Thinkaboutthewaywereactwhensomethinggoeswrongwithinanorganizationtoday.Peoplenolongertendtoacceptsurface-levelexplanations.Whenastudentissexuallyassaultedonacollegecampusoranunarmedmaniskilledbypolice,peoplenowtalkabout“rapeculture”and“policeculture.”Wewanttoknowaboutthelargercontextthat’sinformingindividualthinkingandtheforcesthatanimateindividualbehavior.We’vecometounderstandthatattitudes,actions,mindsetsandbeliefscomefromadeepplaceinourcollectivecharacter.
We’vegrownlessinterestedinbadapplesandmuchmoreinterestedinthetreesthatcreatethem.“Culture”isourwordoftheyearbecausewewantthedeepestexplanationpossible.Althoughwedon’tautomaticallyaskthesamequestionswhensomethinggoesspectacularlywell,weoughtto.Insomerealms,likesports,thisshifthasalreadystarted.

Thatsaid,anyemphasisoncultureisapromisingsign.The“BestCompaniestoWorkFor”listchroniclescompaniesthatcareabouttheirpeopleandhavetakenimmensestridestowardhumanity.Butthoseofusinthecorporateworldhavefarmoreprogress–anddifficultculture-buildingwork–aheadofus.
Thefirststepinthisworkiscleaninghouseandgettingridoftheghostsofoldandoutdatedthinking.
Thewords“howmuch”havealwayshauntedbusiness,politicsandourpersonallives:
Howmuchrevenuecanwesqueezeintothisquarter?
Howmuchdebtcanwetolerate?
Howmuchgrowthcanwegenerate?
But“howmuch”questionsaren’ttherightquestions–notinaneverchanging,increasinglyinterconnectedworld,andnotinabusinessrealmwherecompetitiveadvantagecannotbesustainedviaout-producing,outspendingorout-selling.Insteadofreflexivelyasking“howmuch,”weshouldexamine“how”.Notjust“Howmuchsquarefootagecanweaffordforthenewnaproom?

”or“Howfairisourdecisionmakingprocess?
”Ifyourcompanyisreallythe“right”placetowork,youdon’tjustmeasure“howmuch”,yourmeasure“how”tocreateorganizations,societies,institutionsandbusinessesthatmirrorourdeepestvalues:
trust,collaboration,resiliency,andfreedom.

Butwecan,andneedto,godeeper.Mostofourcollectivethinkinganddoinghasbarelyscratchedculture’ssurface;itfocusesprimarilyontherelationshipbetweenemployeeandcompany.Agreatworkplacedoesnotguaranteethatthecompanyhasgreatrelationshipswithitscustomers,investors,communitiesortheenvironment.Nordoesahighwork/lifequality(somethingnearlyallofuswouldverymuchwant)necessarilybringaboutahigh-qualityemployee-employerrelationship.Forthat,deep,uncomfortablequestionsneedtobeasked:
howtrustworthyisourcompany?
Howdoweconveyandinstillasenseofvaluesthroughoutourorganization?
