Theworldhassofarshruggedoffhigheroilpriceswiththehelpoftwopowerfuleconomicforces.ThefirstistheopeningupandintegrationintotheworldeconomyofChina,Indiaandotheremergingeconomies,Thishasgiventhebiggestboosttoglobalsupplysincetheindustrialrevolution.

Theeraofcheapmoneyisnearinganend.Forthefirsttimein15years,thethreebigcentralbanksarenowalltighteningmonetarypolicy.TheEuropeanCentralBankhasalreadyfollowedtheFederalReserve'sleadinraisinginterestrates.Onlynowarethemarketsrealisingthatinterestratesmayrisebymorethantheyhadexpected.Inthelongterm,ratesshouldberoughlyequaltonominalGDPgrowth,butinAmericaandelsewheretheyarestillwellbelowit.OptimistsarguethatAmerica'seconomyiscopingwellwithrisinginterestrates,butitisn'treallyawareoftightmoneyyet.Withouteasycredit,dearoilwillcausemorepain.
Untilrecently,financialmarketsappearedtobebettingthattheGoldilockseconomy一neithertoohot,nortoocold一wassafefromthebears.Thetroubledmarketsareareminderthatsoonerorlatergrowthwillsloworinflationwillrise.Inflationisnotabouttospiralupwardsbutwithdiminishingsparecapacity,itcouldgraduallyrise.AmericahasanextrariskbecauseWallStreetsuspectsthatBenBernanke,theFed'snewchairman,maybeasofttouchoninflation.Ifthatsuspicionpersists,hewillneedtoraiseinterestratesbymorethanotherwise一orinvestorswilldothetighteningforhimbypushingupbondyields.Thatwouldmakeotherassetslookexpensive.
ItisintheAmericanhousingmarketthatthebearmaygrowlloudest.Byborrowingagainstthesurgingpricesoftheirhomes,Americanconsumershavebeenabletokeeponspending.Thehousingmarketisalreadycomingofftheboil.Ifpricesmerelyflatten,theeconomycouldslowsharplyasconsumerspendingandconstructionaresqueezed.Ifhousepricesfallasaresultofhigherbondyields,theAmericaneconomycouldevendipintorecession.LessspendingandmoresavingisjustwhatAmericaneedstoreduceitscurrent-accountdeficit,butforAmericanhouseholdsusedtoyearsofplentyitwillhurt.
