thisregion,SaklikentGorge(峡谷),a300-meter-deepcanyonthatisclosetoFethiye.

Lalikaseemedtobearitbetter,astheywerethefirsttobeginheadingthroughthefastflowing

waters.

Soonitwasuptotheirknees,butbattlingtheirwaythroughtheywerethefirstofour

familytomakeitacross.DuringthistimeIwasconsideringifIreallywantedtogothroughwith

this.ThelookonMum'sfaceshowedmethattherewasnoalternative.Shetookmyhandand

webeganmakingourwaythroughtheice-coldwatertothesoundofLalika'scheers.Inearly

slippedatonepointbutthankfullyIrecoveredintimeandMumandIcameoutofthewaterhalf

dryandveryhappy.

Thenthecanyonwasinfrontofus.Ibegantowadethroughthesoftestflowinggreyclay

thathaddepositeditselfoverthousandsofyearsbetweenthismagnificentMoorishpinkgorge

toweringoverme.Iwassurprisedthatthelocalshadn'talreadymadeabeautyindustryoutof

this,miningthisnaturalresource,whenIrememberedthatthankfully,itwasaprotected

nationalpossession,locatedinanationalpark.

Thatdidn'tstopDadandLalikafrommakingamudpack,asthetwoofthemsmoothedthe

HarrySteenbockisprofessorofbiochemistryattheUniversityofWisconsin-Madison,and

increasethevitaminDcontentoffoodsbyirradiating(照射)themwithultravioletlight.

Steenbockwaseagertosharehisbreakthroughdiscoverywiththeworld.But,heknewhe

neededtocarefullymanagehisdiscoverysoitcouldreachitsfullpotentialandbenefitthe

greatergood.

Steenbocksubmittedapatentapplicationwith$3000fhisownmoneytoprotecthis

discovery.TheQuakerOatsCompanyofferedSteenbockadealvaluedatnearly$1million

(almost$10millionintoday'smoney)forexclusiverightstohisinvention.Despitethishuge

amountofmoney,SteenbockturneddowntheQuakerdeal.Hefeltthattheprofitsfromlus

discoveryshouldbereturnedtotheuniversitytomakefuturescientificresearchpossible-and

hehadavisionforhowtoprotecthisbreakthroughdiscoveryandpassitsbenefitsontothe

public.

SteenbockimaginedanonprofitfoundationthatwouldprotectdiscoveriesmadebyUW-

Madisonresearchersthroughpatentmanagementandlicensing,investinresearch-based

discoveries,andreturnprofitstotheuniversitytofinancefurtherscientificinquiry.Nine

generousalumni(校友)donated$100eachtoaidtheeffortsandonNovember14,1925,the

WisconsinAlumniResearchFoundation(WARF)becameoneofthenation'sfirstuniversity-

basedtechnologytransfer(转让)offices.Thenewpatentmanagementagencycarriedoutits

firstlicenseagreementinFebruary1927withtheQuakerOatsCompany.Quakerwentontouse
