TheoriginofFather'sDayisnotclear.SomesaythatitbeganwithachurchserviceinWestVirginiain1908.OtherssaythefirstFather'sDayceremonywasheldinVancouver,Washington.

ThepresidentoftheChicagobranchoftheLions'Club,HarryMeek,issaidtohavecelebratedthefirstFather'sDaywithhisorganizationin1915;andthedaythattheychosewasthethirdSundayinJune,theclosestdatetoMeek'sownbirthday!

RegardlessofwhenthefirsttrueFather'sDayoccurred,thestrongestpromoteroftheholidaywasMrs.BruceJohnDoddofSpokane,Washington.Mrs.Doddfeltthatshehadanoutstandingfather.HewasaveteranoftheCivilWar.Hiswifehaddiedyoung,andhehadraisedsixchildrenwithouttheirmother.

In1909,Mrs.DoddapproachedherownministerandothersinSpokaneabouthavingachurchservicededicatedtofathersonJune5,herfather'sbirthday.Thatdatewastoosoonforherministertopreparetheservice,sohespokeafewweekslateronJune19th.Fromthenon,thestateofWashingtoncelebratedthethirdSundayinJuneasFather'sDay.Childrenmadespecialdesserts,orvisitedtheirfathersiftheylivedapart.

StatesandorganizationsbeganlobbyingCongresstodeclareanannualFather'sDay.In1916,PresidentWoodrowWilsonapprovedofthisidea,butitwasnotuntil1924whenPresidentCalvinCoolidgemadeitanationaleventto"establishmoreintimaterelationsbetweenfathersandtheirchildrenandtoimpressuponfathersthefullmeasureoftheirobligations."Sincethen,fathershadbeenhonoredandrecognizedbytheirfamiliesthroughoutthecountryonthethirdSundayinJune.
