Thestoryofthesong“HappyBirthdaytoYou”beganasasweetone,butlaterbecamebitter.Twosisters,MildredHill,ateacheratakindergarten,andDr.PattyHill,theprincipalofthesameschool,wroteasongtogetherforthechildren,entitled“GoodMorningtoAll”.WhenMildredcombinedhermusicaltalentswithhersister’sknowledgeintheareaofkindergarteneducation,‘GoodMorningtoAll”wassuretobeasuccess.Thesisterspublishedthesonginacollectionentitled“SongStoriesoftheKindergarten”in1893.Thirty-oneyearslater,afterDr.PattyHillbecametheheadoftheDepartmentofKindergartenEducationatColumbiaUniversity’sTeachersCollege,agentlemanbythenameRobertColemanpublishedthesong,withoutthesisters’permission.Headdedasecondpart,whichisthefamiliar“HappyBirthdaytoYou”.Mr.Coleman’sadditionofthesecondpartmadethesongpopularand,finally,thesisters”originalfirstpartdisappeared.“HappyBirthdaytoYou”hadaltogetherreplacedthesisters’originalsong“GoodMorningtoAll”.In1916PattytooklegalactionagainstMr.Coleman.Incourt,shesucceededinprovingthattheyweretherealownersofthesong.

Mozartwasagreatmusicianandcomposerwhosefamecontinuestogrowmorethantwocenturiesafterhisdeath.HewasborninSalzburg,Austria,in1756.Beforetheageoffour,hewasalreadyshowinggreatmusicaltalent.Hisfatherthendecidedtolethimstarttakingmusiclessons.Theboy’sreputationasamusicalprodigygrewfast.Atfive,hewascomposingmusic.Formthattimeon,Mozartwasperforminginconcertsandwritingmusic.Byhisearlyteens,hehadmasteredthepianoandtheviolin,andwaswritingsymphoniesandoperas.HisfirstmajoroperawasperformedinMilanin1770whenhewasonly14.Atfifteen,MozartbecametheconductorforanorchestrainSalzburg.In1781,heleftforVienna,wherehewasingreatdemandasbothaperformerandacompositionteacher,andhisfirstoperawasasuccess.Butlifewasnoteasybecausehewasapoorbusinessman,andhisfinanceswerealwaysinabadstate.Hismusicfromthenextdecadewasnotverypopular,andheeventuallyfellbackonhisteachingjobsforaliving.In1788hestoppedperforminginpublic,preferringonlytocompose.Hediedin1791attheageofthirty-five.Althoughhelivedonlyashortlife,hecomposedover600works.
