TLCVisualizationReagents

ThisisabriefselectionofthemanyavailableTLCvisualizationreagents.Beloweachtitleisthetypeofcompoundsorstructurewhichcanbedetectedwiththespecificreagent.Whenbeginningworkwiththesereagents,acquireanyMSDS(materialsafetydatasheets)toseeifthereareanyextraprecautionsneededinsafelyusingthem.

Beforespraying,platesshouldbewelldriedinthehoodofresidualsolventsandcomponents.Aminesandorganicacidsusedinthemobilephasesmayadverselyaffectthevisualizationreactionbeingattempted.Ifheatingtoremovethesecomponentsisdone,considerationshouldbegivensothatlossofcomponentsortheirdecompositionisavoided(byloweringthetemperatureorusingashortertimeintheoven).

Alwayssprayanyofthesereagentsontoplatesinawellventilatedhoodwhilewearingsafetyglasses.Alsoapplymoderateamountstotheplatesoitalwaysappearsdullandflat(ifitlookswet,youhavesprayedtoomuch).Youcanalwaysoverspraytoenhancethedetection.
