Successthatcomestooeasilyisalsodamaging.Thechildwhowinsaprizeforadashed-offessay,theadultwhodistinguisheshimselfatafirstjobbyluckyaccidentfacesprobabledisappointmentwhenrealchallengesarise.

Successisalsobadwhenit'sachievedatthecostofthetotalqualityofanexperience.Successfulstudentssometimesbecomesoobsessedwithgradesthattheyneverenjoytheirschoolyears.Theyneverbranchoutintotemptingnewareas,becausetheydon’twanttorisktheirgradeaverage.

Successmay,quitesimply,costtoomuch-instrain(infightingatthejob,keepingacheerfulpublicfacewhileyourpersonallifefallsapart)orlossofintegrity(诚实,正直)(flattering,lying,goingalongwithquestionableactions).Aboveall,itmaybetoocostlyiftheendresultisfearofnotrepeatingthesuccess.OneofthemostsuccessfulhostessesIknowhascometohateentertaining:

“I’veacquiredsuchareputation,”sheexplains,“thatmyfriendsexpectmetooutdomyself.Ican’tdisappointthemandI’mwornoutbeforemyguestsarrive.”

Whyaresomanypeoplesoafraidoffailure?

Quitesimplybecausenoonetellsushowtofailsothatfailurebecomesagrowingexperience.Weforgetthatfailureispartofthehumanconditionandthat,asfamilytherapistVirginiaSatirobserves,“everypersonhastherighttofail.”
