WorldtourismhastraditionallybeenmeasuredinInternationalTouristArrivalsandInternationalTouristReceipts.Accordingtopreliminaryresultsfor1999thenumberofinternationaltouriststravelingintheworldreached664million,anincreaseof4.5percentoverthepreviousyear.Receiptsfrominternationaltourismrosebyanestimated3.1percentin1999toreachUS$455billion.ThismeansthatworldwidetheaveragereceiptsperarrivalamountstoUS$685.
2.Internationaltourismbymeansoftransport
Dataforthelastdecadeshowthatairandroadtransportare,byfar,themeansoftransportmostwidelyusedbyinternationaltourists.In1999,airtransportrepresented43percentofthetotalandroadtransport42percent.Railtransportaccountsfor7percentandseatransportfor8percent.Overtimeacleartrendcanbeobservedofaslowbutsteadyincreaseofairtransportattheexpenseofroadtransport.
3.Internationaltourismbypurposeofvisit
Accordingtofiguresupto1998,leisure,recreationandholidaysstillrepresentthemainpurposeofvisit,accountingfor62percent.Businesstravelaccountsfor18percentofthetotal,theremaining20percentbeingrepresentedbyothermotives,forexample,visitingfriendsandrelatives,forhealthtreatmentandother.
Inthelasttenyearsespecially,theshareofthislastcategoryhasbeenrising.Thisincreasehasbasicallydetractedfromtheshareoftotaltripsmadeforleisure,recreationandholidaypurposes,theshareascribedtotravelforbusinessandprofessionalpurposeshavingremainedrelativelystable.
4.WTOlong-termforecasttourism2020Vision
Tourism2020VisionistheWorldTourismOrganization'slong-termforecastandassessmentofthedevelopmentoftourismuptothefirst20yearsofthenewmillennium.
WTO'sTourism2020Visionforecaststhatinternationalarrivalsareexpectedtoreachover1.56billionbytheyear2020.Oftheseworldwidearrivalsin2020,1.18billionwillbeintra-regionaland0.38billionwillbelong-haultravelers.
Thetotaltouristarrivalsbyregionshowsthatby2020thetopthreereceivingregionswillbeEurope(717milliontourists),EastAsiaandthePacific(397million),andtheAmericas(282million),followedbyAfrica,theMiddleEastandSouthAsia.
EastAsiaandthePacific,SouthAsia,theMiddleEast,andAfricaareforecastedtorecordgrowthatarateofover5percentperyearcomparedtotheworldaverageof4.1percent.
Europewillmaintainthehighestpercentageofworldarrivals,althoughtherewillbeadeclinefrom60percentin1995to46percentin2020.By2010theAmericaswillloseitsnumbertwopositiontotheEastAsiaandthePacificregionwhichwillreceive25percentofworldarrivalsin2020withtheAmericasdecreasingfrom19percentin1995to18percentin2020.
