）vonStauffenbergdidnotactuallykillHitler.Theplotfailedandtheconspiratorswereexecuted.Playedasatragedy,orastarkstudyoffailedambitions,thismightnothavebeenaproblem.ExceptthatSingeroptstoframeValkyrieasahigh-conceptwartimesuspensethriller,invitingustosuspendourdisbeliefandgoalongfortheride.

The1944plotwasatleastfiendishlyplannedandgenerallywellexecuted.Singer's,bycontrast,seemsflawedandfoolhardyfromthestart.

ButwhatofSinger'sco-conspirator?

ValkyriepaintsvonStauffenbergasthearchetypal"goodGerman",amodelofelegantdisenchantment.AndyetCruise,forallhisskillsasaperformer,doesnotdodisenchantment.Foralltheanguishedmomentsofdoubt,theconstantstaresintothemirror,hisvonStauffenbergisessentiallyTopGunwithaneye-patch.

Thefilm'scuriousmelangeofdialectsonlyunderscoresthisquality.VonStauffenberg'scohortsareplayedbyBritishactors（BillNighy,TerenceStamp,KennethBranagh）whodelivertheirlinesinEnglishaccents.ThevillainousNaziisportrayedbyGermanactorThomasKretschmannwhospeaksEnglishinaGermanaccent.Andthen-standingseparateandapart-isCruisehimself,intoninghislinesinpurebloodAmerican.HemightaswellhavebeendroppedinfromanAlliedplane;agung-hoHollywoodherosentintocleanupaveryEuropeanmess.Hecouldn'tmanageitasakid,andhecan'tquitedoitnow.Hitlerone;TomCruisenil.

Granted,Harry'sgotaHorcruxtodealwiththistimearound,anddespitesoundinglikeaconditioncontractedinadubiousmassageparlour,it'sabitmoreseriousthanChocolateFrogsandButterbeer,beingpartofDarkLordVoldemort'ssoul,splinteredintosevenandstoredindifferentlocations,likeakindofblackmagicinsuranceschemeagainstdeath.

ThisprovidesthemotivationforthemostLordOfTheRingscribbingsequenceyet,withGandalf/Dumbledore（MichaelGambon）andFrodo/Harrytravellingtoaremoterockyoutcroptodestroythetrouble-makingtrinketonceandforall,amidstepictrialsandadecentlyspookysequenceinvolvingseveralhundredGollum-esquecreatures.However,allthisismerelyapreludetothefilm'smoneyshot,themuch-touteddeathofamajorcharacter,whichincaseyou'vesomehowavoidedthespoilers,wewon'truinhere.

LestyourunawaywiththeimpressionthatTheHalf-BloodPrincecouldcompetewithTheBitterTearsofPetraVonKantforLeastLaughsinaMotionPicture,itcan'tbestatedtooclearlythatwhatsetsthisoneapartishavingadecentsenseofhumouraboutitself.
