Monarchbutterfliesareknownfortheirimpressive,almost3,000milemigrationeachfall.Whentheweatherstartstogetcooler,thebutterfliesmovefromsummerhabitatsinCanadaandthenorthernU.S.towarmerwinterhomesinMexicoandCalifornia.

ThedropinnumbersofthisbelovedbutterflyispartlybecauseoffarmingpracticesintheU.S.Midwest,wheremonarchsarefirstborn.Manyfarmersthereuseherbicides,orchemicalsthatdestroyunwantedplants.Unfortunately,theherbicidesarealsodestroyingthemilkweedplant,whichmonarchcaterpillars(幼虫)feedon.

Inthepast20years,monarchbutterflieshavelostabout165millionacresoftheirhabitats—anareaaboutthesizeofTexas.That'saboutathirdoftheirsummerbreedinggrounds(繁殖地).AndmostoftheirwinteringgroundsinMexicoandCaliforniahavesufferedfromdroughts,heatwaves,andseverestorms,whichhavebeendamagingtothecreatures.Heavylogging(伐木)intheseregionshasalsobeendestroyingmonarchhabitats.

Ifofficialslabelmonarchsendangered,theU.S.FishandWildlifeServicewilltrytheirbesttoensurethatmonarchsdonotdieout.
