reaganwasbornonfebruary6,1911,inanapartmentaboveabankintampico,illinois.hewasthesecondoftwosonsborntojohnedwardreagan(1883–1941),anirishamericancatholic,andnelleclydewilson(1883–1962),whowasofscottish,canadianandenglishdescentandamemberofthedisciplesofchrist.hisolderbrotherwasneilreagan(1908–1996).hispaternalgreat-grandfather,michaelreagan,cametotheunitedstatesfromballyporeen,countytipperary,ireland,inthe1860s,andtherestofhispaternalfamilyimmigratedfromirelandinthe1800saswell.priortohisimmigration,thefamilynamewasspelledregan.hismaternalgreat-grandfather,johnwilson,immigratedtotheunitedstatesfrompaisley,scotland,inthe1840sandmarriedjaneblue,acanadianfromqueens,newbrunswick.reagan“smaternalgrandmother,maryanneelsey,wasborninepsom,surrey,england.althoughhisfatherwascatholic,reagan“smotherwasanactiveprotestantandhewasraisedinthechristianchurch(disciplesofchrist)denominationandattendedachurchschool,eurekacollege.

in1937,whenincaliforniatocoverspringtrainingforthechicagocubsasaheadlineradioannouncer,reagantookascreentestthatledtoaseven-yearcontractwiththewarnerbrothersstudio.reagan"sclearvoice,easy-goingmanner,andathleticphysiquemadehimpopularwithaudiences;themajorityofhisscreenroleswereastheleadingmaninbmovies.hisfirstscreencreditwasthestarringroleinthe1937movieloveisontheair.bytheendof1939,hehadappearedin19films.beforesantafetrailin1940,heplayedtheroleofgeorge"thegipper"gippinthefilmknuterockne,allamerican.fromthisroleheacquiredthenicknamethegipper,whichheretainedtherestofhislife.reaganconsideredhisbestactingworktohavebeeninkingsrow(1942).heplayedthepartofayoungmanwhoselegswereamputated.heusedalinehespokeinthisfilm,"where"stherestofme?

astheyearswenton,thediseaseslowlydestroyedhismentalcapacity,forcinghimtoliveinquietisolation.onfebruary6,xx,reaganreachedtheageof90andwasonlythethirdformeruspresidenttoreachthatage-theothertwobeingjohnadamsandherberthoover.sincetheformerpresidenthadahipoperationthreeweekspriortohis90thbirthdayandwassufferingfromalzheimer"sdiseaseforthepastsevenyears,his90thbirthdaywastobealow-keycelebrationwithhisfamilyathishomeinbel-air.nancyreagan,thewifeoftheformeruspresident,toldcnn"slarrykingthatveryfewvisitorswereallowedaccesstoherhusbandbecauseshefeltthat"ronniewouldwantpeopletorememberhimashewas."nancyreaganwentontosaythatastheonlyailmenthehadwasthealzheimer"sdiseasehecouldlivetobe100.peoplewhohadvisitedtheformeruspresidentinhishomesaidthediseasewassowelladvancedthathewasunabletorecognizeanyofthemandhecouldnotrememberanythingabouthisdaysasuspresident.
