reaganwasbornonfebruary6,1911,inanapartmentaboveabankintampico,illinois.hewasthesecondoftwosonsborntojohnedwardreagan（1883–1941）,anirishamericancatholic,andnelleclydewilson（1883–1962）,whowasofscottish,canadianandenglishdescentandamemberofthedisciplesofchrist.hisolderbrotherwasneilreagan（1908–1996）.hispaternalgreat-grandfather,michaelreagan,cametotheunitedstatesfromballyporeen,countytipperary,ireland,inthe1860s,andtherestofhispaternalfamilyimmigratedfromirelandinthe1800saswell.priortohisimmigration,thefamilynamewasspelledregan.hismaternalgreat-grandfather,johnwilson,immigratedtotheunitedstatesfrompaisley,scotland,inthe1840sandmarriedjaneblue,acanadianfromqueens,newbrunswick.reagan“smaternalgrandmother,maryanneelsey,wasborninepsom,surrey,england.althoughhisfatherwascatholic,reagan“smotherwasanactiveprotestantandhewasraisedinthechristianchurch（disciplesofchrist）denominationandattendedachurchschool,eurekacollege.

in1937,whenincaliforniatocoverspringtrainingforthechicagocubsasaheadlineradioannouncer,reagantookascreentestthatledtoaseven-yearcontractwiththewarnerbrothersstudio.reagan"sclearvoice,easy-goingmanner,andathleticphysiquemadehimpopularwithaudiences;themajorityofhisscreenroleswereastheleadingmaninbmovies.hisfirstscreencreditwasthestarringroleinthe1937movieloveisontheair.bytheendof1939,hehadappearedin19films.beforesantafetrailin1940,heplayedtheroleofgeorge"thegipper"gippinthefilmknuterockne,allamerican.fromthisroleheacquiredthenicknamethegipper,whichheretainedtherestofhislife.reaganconsideredhisbestactingworktohavebeeninkingsrow（1942）.heplayedthepartofayoungmanwhoselegswereamputated.heusedalinehespokeinthisfilm,"where"stherestofme?
