Let’sstartbytakingacloserlookatwhatthestudyactuallysays.TheresearchersaskedDanishrunnersaboutthespeed,frequencyanddurationoftheirworkouts,categorizing878ofthemaslight,moderateorstrenuousjoggers.Tenyearslater,theresearcherscheckedgovernmentrecordstoseehowmanyofthemhaddied.

Happily,only17had.Whilethiswasgoodnewsforthesurvivingrunners,itwasbadnewsfortheresearchers,because17wasclearlytoofewdeathstodiscernwhethertheriskofdeathwasrelatedtorunningintensity.Nonetheless,thestudyclaimedthattoomuchjoggingwasassociatedwithahighermortalityrate.Itisbasedon40peoplewhowerecategorizedas“strenuousjoggers”—amongwhomonlytwodied.AsAlexHutchinsonofRunner’sWorldwrote,“Thankgoodnessathirdpersondidn’tdie,orpublichealthauthoritieswouldbebanningjogging.”Moreover,theresearchersdonotevenreportwhetherthosetwodeathswerefromcausesthatcouldplausiblyberelatedtorunning.

Indeed,noneofthecomparisonsbetweenthosewhorunalotversusalittle,frequentlyversusinfrequently,orfastversusslow,werestatisticallysignificant,evenafteradjustingforpotentialfactorslikeage,gender,education,diabetes,smokinganddrinking.

Theresearchersacknowledgethislackofsignificance,butconfoundedtheissuebypointingtoadifferentquestion.Insteadoffocusingonthedifferencesbetweenlight,moderateandheavyjoggers,theyaskinsteadwhethereachgroupofrunnershadalowerdeathratethananaltogetherdifferentgroup,aseparatesampleof413non-runners.Thereisevenlesstothesefindingsthanmeetstheeye,astheresearchersdidnotcomparerunnerswithnon-runners.
