　　Ifirstread"JaneEyre"ineighthgradeandhavereaditeveryfewyearssince.Itisoneofmyfavoritenovels,andsomuchmorethanagothicromancetome,althoughthat'showIprobablywouldhavedefineditatage13.Ihavealwaysbeenstruck,hauntedinaway,bythecharacters-JaneandMr.Rochester.TheytakeonnewdeptheverytimeImeetthem…andtheir'sisalovestoryfortheages.

　　CharlotteBronte'sfirstpublishednovel,andhermostnotedwork,isasemi-autobiographicalcoming-of-agestory.Janeisplain,poor,aloneandunprotected,butduetoherfierceindependenceandstrongwillshegrowsandisabletodefysociety'sexpectationsofher.Thisisdefinitelyfeministliterature,publishedin1847,waybeforethebeginningofanyfeministmovement.Perhapsthisisoneofthereasonswhythenovelhashadsuchawidefollowingsinceitfirstcameonthemarket.Itisalsooneofthefirstgothicromancespublishedanddefinesthegenre.
