InthebackyardoftheirTucsonhome,MohitandSherryModienjoydiningandrelaxinginasettingthatblendsseamlesslywiththenaturalscenery.Perchedatoparidge,thegardentakesfulladvantageofviewsthatincludeaverdantgorgebelowthepropertyandtheSantaCatalinaMountainstothenorth.

Previouslyapatchofdeadlawnwithafewrandomshrubs,theyardwastransformedunderthedirectionoflandscapearchitectPhilipVanWyck.Bybuildingaseriesoflowwalls,plantingbeds,andwalkways（sometimesincludingnaturalgraniteboulders）,VanWycksolvedseveraloftheproperty'sdrainageissues.Atthesametime,hefulfilledtheModis'wishlistbyincludingaspa,outdoorkitchen,fireplace,andwaterfeature.Drought-tolerantandnativeplants—includingbougainvillea,Daleacapitata,desertspoon（Dasylirionwheeleri）,Salviaclevelandii,andVerbenarigida—softenthehardscapeandaddcolorandtexturetothedesign.Beyondthewalls,severalbluepaloverdeswereplantedtoscreenviewsofneighboringhousesandfurtherintegratethelandscapewithitssurroundings.

Oakland,CA.Drivewaysarechallengingfeaturestointegrateintoalandscape.That'swhythejurorswereimpressedwiththisprojectinwhichMathewHenning,HeatherAnderson,andRoseKeaneturnedanunappealingasphaltentrywayintoanelegantapproach.

Inkeepingwiththecontemporarystyleofthehome,thedesignersoverlappedgranite,stainedconcrete,andmultihuedgravelsfortexturalinterest.Astripofwhiteconcreteworksasadrainagechannel.Thestainedconcretepaddirectsvisitorstothefrontdoor.Theretainingwalliswrappedinweldedwiremeshandcoveredwithmorningglory.Threegingkosriseattheendofthedriveway.

Orinda,CA.WhenBobandSusanCottonbegantooverhaultheiryard,theirgoalwastovisuallyconnectittotheirnewlyremodeledhouseandaddafewusefulamenities.LandscapearchitectsStefanThuilotandJosephHuettlturnedasimpleconcretepadandlargeopenlawnintoafamilygardenforentertainingandplay.

Usingcleanlinesandmodernmaterials,ThuilotandHuettlorganizedthebackyardintooverlappingrectangularplanestransversedbyangle-cutbluestonepavers.A12-inch-wide,sandblastedconcretecurbdefinestherectanglesandfunctionsasastepandaretainingwallfortheslopinglot.

Alargeformalterracesetwith24-inch-squarebluestonepaversandasmalldeckprovideroomforoutdoorentertaining.Sincethepatioandlawnareonthesamelevel,there'splentyofroomforminglingduringlarge

parties.Otheramenitiesincludeadistantbench,cozyfirepit（formerlyasandbox）,andsecludedspaforfamilyfun."Thegardengracefullyachievedthedifficulttaskofappealingtobothchildrenandadults,"remarkedonejuror.

Thischeerfulgarden,inspiredbyownerMarciaSmith'svisittoaMexicanbeachresort,provesthatmanyamenitiescanfitintoanareajust17feetlongby15feetwide.

LandscapedesignersPamelaBerstlerandAlexStevensturnedtheformerlybareterracefloorintoagiantworkofartthatgivestheimpressionofwaterswirlingovergranite.Thepavingismadefromcoloredconcretestampedtolooklikegranite.Bluepooltilesareembeddedintheconcrete.Abuilt-indaybedprovidescomfortableseating.

LosAngeles.Theideallandscapereflectsitsregionandtakesadvantageofthesite'sbestfeatures.ThispropertyoverlookingtheSanGabrielMountainsachievesboth.WhendesignerMiaLehrertookontheproject,muchofthenarrowbackyard（withasteepdrop-offatitsrear）wasoccupiedbyatwo-cargarageandahugeexpanseofconcrete.Overgrownshrubsblockedtheview.

Inspiredbytheowner'scollectionofmodernistindoorfurniture,Lehrerdevelopedasleekdesignthatpairsindustrialmaterialswithcolorsthatreflecttheregion'sblueskiesanddramaticsunsets.Themottledbluewallvisuallyconnectsthepooltothesky.Surroundingthe40-foot-long,angledpoolisalawnoffine-bladedfescue,whichdoesn'trequiremowing.
