Everycellinawoman’sbodyhastwoXchromosomes,oneinheritedfromhermotherandtheotherfromherfather.Ineachcell,oneofthesetwoXchromosomesisswitchedoff.Thismeansthatawomanisamosatic(混合体)oftwocelllines:

onederivedfromherfather’sXchromosome,theotherfromhermother’s.Bycontrast,everycellinaman’sbodyhasanXandaYchromosome,neitherofwhichisturnedoff.Hehasonlyoneline.Thisdifferencecouldbecrucialindeterminingthelong-termhealthofmenandwomen,scientistsconcluded,andsotheydecidedtoexaminecellstakenfromyoungwomen.

Theyfoundanevendivisionbetweentheirtwodifferentlines.However,whentheylookedatelderlyfemalestheyfoundtheirbodiesnowfavoredonesetofcellsattheexpenseoftheotherline.“Thissuggeststhatoneofthecelllinesis‘better’thantheother,”saytheresearchers.Inotherwords,women’sbodiesmayselectthemorevigorousofthetwocelllinesandallowittopredominatethetwilightoftheiryears,givingthemacrucialadvantageovermen,whohavenochanceofchoosingthehealthieroftwosetsofcells.
