PREFACE

ThisStandardwaspreparedbytheJointStandardsAustralia/StandardsNewZealandCommitteeWS-032,WaterEfficientProducts,tosupersedeAS/NZS3662:

1996.

ThePlumbingCodeofAustraliarequiresthatwaterefficientproductsbecertifiedtoWaterMarkLevel2.

TheobjectiveofthisStandardistospecifytherequirementsforshowersforbathingpurposes.Showertypesinclude—

（a）showerheadsfastenedtofixedarms;

（b）showerheadsfastenedtopivotalarms;

（c）hand-heldshowersconnectedtoflexiblehoses,and—

（i）supportedbyafixedwallhandsetholder;

（ii）attachedtoasliderail;or

（iii）mountedonaholderattachedtoabath/showermixer.

Whereshowersaresoldtogetherwithothercomponents（e.g.,afixedorpivotarm,aflexiblehosewithorwithoutaflowcontroller）,whichcouldaffecttheperformanceoftheshower,suchcomponentswillneedtobeattachedtotheshowerfortesting.Whereshowersaresoldtogetherwithcomponentsthatwouldnotaffecttheirperformance（e.g.,taptopassemblies,orothercomponents）,suchadditionalcomponentsneednotbeattachedtotheshowerfortesting.

Thisrevisionincludes—

（a）anextendeddefinitionofashowertoincluderelevantcomponents;

（b）amendedtestprocedures;

（c）requirementsforshowerhoses;and

（d）amethodfordeterminingtheeffectivediameterofnon-circular-shapedshowerheads.Theterm‘normative’hasbeenusedinthisStandardtodefinetheapplicationofthe

Asshowersaresignificantconsumersofwater,thisStandardhasbeenrevisedtoencouragethedevelopmentofshowersthatwillgiveacomfortableandeffectiveshowerevenatlowwaterflowrates.

Ashowerisessentiallyatactileexperienceandwhatmaylooklikeagoodshowermaynotbeconfirmedbyuse.Thefollowingfactors,amongothers,influencethequalityofashower:

（a）Waterflowrate

（b）TemperaturedropShowerswithsignificanttemperaturedrops,whichincreasewithdistancefromthehead,couldpresentascaldinghazardandmayrequiregreaterheatedwaterusagetoachieveacceptablewatertemperatures.Theabilityofwatertorinsesoapistemperaturesensitive;therefore,showerswithaminimumtemperaturedrop（dropinwatertemperaturefromtheshowerheadtothelowerlimbs）aremoreeffectiveforablutionpurposes.

ThecriterionfortemperaturedropinthisStandardisbasedonwhatcanbereadilyachievedbymanyshowerscurrentlyonthemarket.

（c）SpraypatternThespraypatternofashowerhastwomainfeatures.Thefirstistheshapeoftheconeofwateremittedandthesecondisthedistributionofspraywithinthecross-sectionsofthecone.Showerswithwideconescandisplaytwoundesirablefeatures:

ifthewatersprayisevenlydistributedthroughoutthecone,asignificanttemperaturedropmaybefeltwithincreasingdistancefromtheshowersprayhead;alternatively,ifthesprayisconcentratedaroundtheperimeterofthecone,theshowermayhaveahollowfeel.Ineithercase,theshowermaypresentdifficultieswhenwashingandrinsingthelowerbodyextremities.

ThisStandardmaintainsarequirementfortheangleofspreadfromtheshowersprayheadofacone.Consumeracceptancetestsondifferentshowerheadsindicatedapreferenceforshowersprayheadswithameansprayspreadangleofbetween3°and7°.

（d）ComfortandeffectivenessAlthoughthevelocityofsprayisafactorinthecomfortandeffectivenessofashower,atestforvelocityofsprayisnotincludedinthisStandard.Highvelocityspraysareuncomfortableandforcethebathertoreducetheflowrate,whichmaybebeneficialforwaterconservation,butmayalsoresultintheshowerbecomingineffective.

TestsconductedonshowerheadstoaidinthedevelopmentofthisStandardindicatedthefollowingwithrespecttosprayexitvelocity:

NooveralltestforthecomfortandeffectivenessofashowerhasyetbeenincludedinthisStandard,ofwhichvelocityisafactor.Researchisunderwaytodevelopsuchcriteria,especiallyforshowerswithflowrateslessthan7.5L/m.
