Itookthreeconsecutive(连续)overnightbusestotravel3,000kmthroughArgentina,fromUshuaia,theworld’ssouthernmostcity,tothecapitalBuenosAires.Iwouldlookoutthewindowsforhoursonendatthecompletelyunspoiledplains,asifhumanshadnevertouchedit.
IttooksevenconsecutivedaysandnightsontrainstogetfromMoscowtoBeijing,eachdayspentgazingoutthewindowsforhoursastheSiberianplainssweptby. Sometimes,Iwouldn’tseeavillageorahumanbeingfor10hours.Laterinmyjourney,ittook22daysonacargofreightertogetfromNewZealandthroughthePanamaCanalandbacktoPhiladelphia,tofinishmyround-the-worldadventure.
ItturnedoutthattravellingwithnoreservationswasfarlessdifficultthanIhadimagined.Pullingintoacityonabuswithabackpack,lookinginaguidebookforafewsuggestionsofaccommodations,andthenfindinganemptyroomwasnevermuchofaproblemanywhere.Italsokeptmeflexibleandopenaboutallmytravelplans,whichisadviceIgiveeveryonewhoasks–planfarlessthanyouthinkyoushould.
