Althoughtheywereoriginallyaddressedtoamedicalaudience,thesubjectsdealtwithherearenotstrictlymedicalinaclinicalsense,butratherrepresenttheauthor'sthinkingonthewayinwhichBiblicalChristianityshouldbeappliedtoquestionsofpersonalconductandmoralityaswellastoprofessionalconductandethics.

INTRODUCTION
ThefollowingpagespresenttypicalpassagesfromthepapersandaddressesgiventomedicalpractitionersandstudentsbyDavidMartynLloyd-Jones[1].Widely–internationally–knownfromhisthirtyyearsofauthoritativepreachinginthepulpitofWestminsterChapel,London,hehadenteredtheChristianministryfromthemedicalprofession.HeleftMedicinein1927,onthethresholdofwhatheldthepromiseofadistinguishedcareerasaconsultantphysician,andthroughouthislifeheremaineddeeplyattachedtotheprofession.Hekepthisinterestinmedicalresearchandcontinuedregularlytoreadthechiefmedicaljournalsandliterature.Hechangedcourseonlybecauseofwhatwereforhimtheoverridingclaimsoftheministry.
Dr.Lloyd-Jones’mainstrengthlayinhispenetratinggraspoftheBible’scentralmessageandhisabilitytoapplyitaccuratelytothecontemporarysituation.Wheninthepulpithisalertmindwaswhollydevotedtoconveyingtotheaudiencetheprecisemeaningofthetextinitscontext.HisteachingabilitywassuchthatillustrationswerefewforhefeltlittleneedtosupplementtheBible’smaterialfromthebestsecularliteratureoranecdote,withtheresultthatfewwhoheardhimcouldeasilyforgethistextanditsessentialthrustinitsoriginalsetting.AnowprominentAustraliansurgeon,whoregularlyattendedWestminsterChapelduringhispostgraduateyearsinLondon,latercommented–‘IhavealwaysfeltthatItherereceivedacompletecourseinBiblicaltheologyandhavegreatlybenefitedeversince.’
Outofthepulpit,Dr.Lloyd-Jonesmadehisbeneficentinfluencefeltinanumberofdirections.Chiefofthese,perhaps,washisimpactontheUniversityChristianUnionsandmembersofthevariousprofessions.Hegavemuchofhisfreetimetotheneedsoftheologicalstudentsandyoungerministers,andalso,intheirturn,tomedicalstudentsandjuniordoctors.Beingdeeplyreadintheologyandchurchhistoryhisaccuratelydiscriminatingmindwasatitsbestwhensortingoutthetheoreticalandpracticalproblemsofordinandsorbusyministers.Oneexample,whichisavailableinprint,maybeseeninthedevastatingreplytoDr.WilliamSargant’sbook–TheBattlefortheMind[2].Thistourdeforcewasgivenataministers’conferenceandledtoanilluminatingdiscussion.From1939totheendofhisministry,Dr.Lloyd-Jonesgaveupawholedayeverymonth,exceptintheSummervacation,towhatgrewintoalargelyattendedministers’conference.EachautumnhealsochairedtheannualconferenceforstudyanddiscussionofthewritingsofthePuritans.Hisownpapersatthisconferenceandsummingupattheendoftheday’sproceedingswereoutstanding.
InspiteofdemandsfromhisownChurch,andmidweekjourneysacrossthecountrytobringencouragementtoothercongregations(andespeciallytopreachattheinductionofnewministerstotheirfirstcharges),herarelyrefusedaidtotheChristianMedicalFellowship.ForoverfifteenyearshechairedtheC.M.F.’s(London)MedicalStudyGroupatwhichhisrestlessresearchmindwasgivenfullreinindismissinginadequatelyconfirmed‘findings’orindemandingprimarysourcesforstatementswhichmightproveonlytorestonpopularimpressionorstatementscopiedfromtextbooktotextbook.
Again,hisownsummingupateachstageoftheGroup’sprogress–or,equally,atpointsoffailuretoachieveany–werefrequentlybrilliant.TheaddresseswhichhegaveattheChristianMedicalFellowship’sAnnualBreakfastsduringtheB.M.A.MeetingsatCardiff1953,Brighton1956andSwansea1965werebycommonconsentamongthebestinalongseriesofsuchoccasions.
Coldprintisapoorsubstitutefortheactualpresenceofthisremarkablepersonality’sconvincingtonesandincisivereasoning,nottospeakofhisskilfuluseofbothhandswhendrivinghomethetruth.Because,inprint,eacharrestingpassageoftenprovessomuchapartofthewarpandwoofofaunifiedtotalargument,selectionhasproveddifficult.Itishoped,however,thatwhatismostrelevanttothecontemporarysituationhasbeenincluded.D.J.

IhavefoundmyselftosomeextentindifficultywhendeterminingthesubjectonwhichIshouldspeaktoyou.Intheend,Ihavebeengovernedbyamedicaldictum.ItisaprincipleofwhichIamsureyouallapproveandtowhichyouadhereinyourownwork.Theruleforouractionmustalwaysbethatwhichisbestforthepatient.Iamthereforegoingtospeakaboutthedoctorhimself.Istillknowenoughaboutthemedicalprofessiontobeawarethatthemenbelongingtoithavecertainparticulartemptations.
IfIwereaskedtomentionthemostseriousoftheseIwouldsaythatitispronenesstoobjectifyeverything,orinotherwords,totakea‘detachedview’.Isupposethatthisistosomeextentinevitable.Ifamedicalmanwerecontinuallytoallowhimselftobeaffectedemotionallybyeverycasehemeets,itisfairlyclearthathecouldnotcontinuelonginpractice.Breakdownwouldbeinevitable.Hethereforehastoputupsomethingofaprotectivebarrier.Hemustnotfeelanythingtoodeeply.Hemustprotecthimselfandhisownsensitivityagainsttheassaultswhichareconstantlymadeuponhimbythetroublesandworriesofothers–especially,perhaps,bythefactofdeath.Whilethatisallperfectlyunderstandable,itdoeshoweverleadtoaparticulardanger.Itbecomesafixedhabitofmind.Thedoctorhassoobjectifiedhimselfthatheneverfacesuptohimselfandtohisownlifeatall.
SomewhereinPembrokeshireatombstoneissaidtobeartheinscription‘JohnJones,bornaman,diedagrocer’.Therearemany,whomIhavehadtheprivilegeofmeeting,whosetombstonemightwellbearthegrimepitaph:
