Ithinkithappenstoeverybodyatsomepointwhereyoufeelonewayaboutyourself.Andthatyourinitial,yourintuitionaboutwhoyouareisthatyou’reagoodperson,thatyou’rebeautiful,thatyou’restrong,thatyou’recapable.Andthenatsomepointit’smetwithanoutsideforcethat’stellingyou,“no,you’renoneofthosethings.”

Iwasbornin1959atthetail-endofthebabyboom.Unfortunately,Iarrivedwithoutallmybodypartsfullyintact.Myleftarmisashortstubwithasmallhandandthreefingersreminiscentofathalidomidedefect.Tomygoodfortune,Ihadsuperbparents.Theywerefighterswhostruck“Ican’t”frommyvocabularyandreplaceitwith“Iwillfindaway”.Theybelievedthedevelopmentofthemind,heartandsouldeterminedwhoyouareandwhoyouwillbecome.Mybodywasnottobeusedasanexcuse.Instead,itwasacatalyst.

Mybodywasnotneglectedthough.Itenduredsurgery;itwasdraggedtophysicaltherapyandtoswimmingandfinallytoYoga.Butitwasnotthefocusofmylife.Iwastaughttorespectmybodybuttorememberitwasonlyavehiclethatcarriedtheimportantthings,mybrainandsoul.Moreover,Iwastaughtthatthebodiescomeinallshapes,colorsandsizesandthateveryonewasstrugglinginsomewaywiththeirphysicalinadequacies.InfomercialshaveconvincedmethismustbetruealthoughthroughadolescenceIfounditdifficulttobelievethecheerleadingsquadhadanyself-doubts.

Inmyalternativelyformedbodies,Ihavelearnedlessonsaboutpatience,determination,frustrationandsuccess.Thisbodycan’tplaythepianoorclimbrockwalls.Butittaughtalltheneighborhoodkidstoeatwiththeirfeet,askillitlearnedinthechildren’shospital.EventuallyIlearnedtotieshoes,crossedthestagetopickupacollegediploma,backpackedthroughEuropeandchangedmybaby’sdiapers.SomepeoplethinkIammybodyandtreatmewithprejudiceorpity.Somearejustcurious.IttookyearsbutIhavelearnedtoignorethestaresandjustsmileback.Mybodyhastaughtmetorespectmyfellowhumans,eventhethinable-bodiedbeautifulones.Iammywords,myideasandmyactions.Iamfilledwithlove,humor,ambitionandintelligence.ThisIbelieve.Iamyourfellowhumanbeingand,likeyou,Iamsomuchmorethanabody.
