Marxreducestheprocessofreflectiontothelevelofinstrumentalaction.Byreducingtheself-positingoftheabsoluteegotothemoretangibleproductiveactivityofthespecies,beeliminatesreflectionassuchasamotiveforceofhistory,eventhoughberetainstheframeworkofthephilosophyofreflection.Hisre-interpretationofHegel'sPhenomenologybetraystheparadoxicalconsequencesoftakingFichte'sphilosophyoftheegoandunderminingitwithmaterialism.Heretheappropriatingsubjectconfrontsinthenon-egonotlustaproductoftheegobutrathersomeportionofthecontingencyofnature.Inthiscasetheactofappropriationisnolongeridenticalwiththereflectivere-integrationofsomepreviouslyexternalisedpartofthesubjectitself.Marxpreservestherelationofthesubject'spriorpositingactivity(whichwasnottransparenttoitself),thatisofhypostatisation,totheprocessofbecomingconsciousofwhathasbeenobjectified,thatisofreflection.But,onthepremisesofaphilosophyoflabour,thisrelationturnsintotherelationofproductionandappropriation,ofexternalisationandtheappropriationofexternalisedessentialpowers.Marxconceivesofreflectionaccordingtothemodelofproduction.Becausehetacitlystartswiththispremise,itisnotinconsistentthathedoesnotdistinguishbetweenthelogicalstatusofthenaturalsciencesandofcritique.
