摘要
无论是在生活中还是在工作中,英语都得到广泛应用。
英语在中学教学中,也是一门很重要的学科,而作为一个英语学习者,听、说、读、写是其四项基本的能力很重要,尤其是英语阅读能力。
但是中学生的阅读能力并不理想,存在许多的问题。
本文首先探究了中学生在英语阅读中存在的问题,词汇贫乏,语法基础知识薄弱,缺乏对中西方文化背景的了解以及缺乏阅读技巧等,并分析其原因。
最后给出了解决对策,学生要从基础做好,积累词汇量,而老师应选好合适的阅读材料,注重中西文化结合的灌输,提高学生的几项关键的阅读技巧,如如何处理生词,如何利用浏览和跳读来提高阅读的效率等。
通过对中学生阅读问题的探讨以及对策的研究,解决中学生在阅读中存在的问题,达到提高中学生的英语阅读能力的目的。

ABSTRACT
Nowadays,nomatterinthedailylifeorinwork,Englishhasbeenwidelyused.Whatismore,Englishisanimportantsubjectinmiddleschool.Ofthefourbasicskills,listening,speaking,readingandwriting,EnglishreadingisthemostimportantoneinEnglishlearning.However,therearesomanyproblemsformiddleschoolstudentsinEnglishreading.Thisthesis,firstly,aimsatsummarizingwhatproblemsmiddleschoolstudentsusuallyencounterintheirreading,thelackofvocabulary,interest,readingskillsandthebackgroundknowledge;andsecondly,withalltheproblems,itistosuggestsomecorrespondingsolutionstothemaftersomepossiblereasonsareexplored,studentsshouldbuildupafirmvocabularyandaccumulatebackgroundknowledge,andteachersshouldchoosetheproperreadingmaterial,andfocusontheculturalknowledgeinthepassage,andteachthemsomemajorstrategiesofreading,suchasthestrategiesofdealingwithnewwords,andtheuseofskimmingandscanningtoimprovetheefficiencyofEnglishreading.
Byexploringtheproblemsofthemiddleschoolstudentsandthesolutions,thethesisisattendingtohelpthestudentstoimprovetheirEnglishreadingability.

1.Introduction
1.1TheImportanceofEnglishReading
Aseveryoneknows,Englishisaninternationallanguage;itiswidelyusedallovertheworld.ThereareovertwentycountriesspeakEnglishastheirofficiallanguageorsecondlanguage.Thenumberofthesepeopleisnearly800million,itmeansthatoneknowsEnglishtosomeextentineveryfivepersons;whatismore,60percentoftheradiobroadcastisinEnglishallovertheworld,andmostpeoplewhocareaboutthecurrentinternationalaffairsknowthatformostinternationalconferencesEnglishisthefirstlanguage,andEnglishisoneoftheofficiallanguagesfortheUnitedNations.LearningandusingEnglishhasbecomeacertaintrendinChina.Therefore,Englishisveryimportantinnearlyeveryaspect.Englishreadingisoneofthefourbasicskills,anditisthemostimportantoneinEnglishlearning.MostoftheadvancedscienceandtechnologymaterialiswritteninEnglish,soEnglishreadingisveryimportant.
1.2TheCurrentSituationofMiddleSchoolStudents’EnglishReading
AseveryEnglishteacherinmiddleschoolknows,EnglishreadingtakesupalargescoreproportioninanyexaminationrelatedtoEnglish.Forexample,theSeniorHighSchoolEntranceExaminationofWuhanhasincreasedtheproportionofEnglishreading,andEnglishreadingtakes60scoresinthecollegeentranceexaminationofHainanprovince.
InmiddleschoolsinthecontextofChina,thereareagreatnumberofproblemsconcerningEnglishlearning,especiallyEnglishreading.SoastoimprovetheirEnglishreadingability,theprimarystepistofindtheproblems.MiddleschoolstudentsarelackingofcapacitytorealizetheirproblemsandlearnEnglishinaproperway.Therefore,Englishteacherscanhelp.StudytheproblemsofthestudentsintheirEnglishlearningprocess,especiallyinthereadingpart.Andthen,helpthemtoanalyzetheproblemssothattosolvetheproblems.
1.3TheStructureofThisThesis
ThisthesisstudiestheproblemsandsolutionsconcerningEnglishreadingformiddleschoolstudents.Thefirstchapterintroducestheresearchbackground,andtheimportanceofthisstudy.Thesecondchaptercomesupwithseveraluniversalproblemsformiddleschoolstudents,andanalyzesthecausesconcerningEnglishreadingproblems,therearefivemainproblems.Thethirdchapterputsforwardcorrespondingsolutionstosuchreadingproblems.
2.TheProblemsinEnglishReadingforMiddleSchoolStudents
2.1TheMajorProblemsinEnglishReadingamongMiddleSchoolStudents
AsweallknowthatstudentsshouldbethemajorroleofEnglishlearningprocess.InordertolearnEnglishreadingwell,studentsandteachersneedtorealizetheproblemsinEnglishreading,andthenstudytheproblemsandtakemeasurestosolvethem.Nowwearegoingtodiscussthemainproblemsofthestudents,whichoughttodrawtheteachersandstudents’attention.Nowthatthestudentisthemainroleinteachingprocess,themainproblemscomefromthestudents.
2.1.1TheLackofVocabulary
VocabularyisafoundationalbutvitalfactorforEnglishlearnersineverylearningphrase,anditisalsocrucialinreadingpart.Aseveryonehasknown,sentences,paragraphsandpassagescanonlymakesenseontheconditionthatwordswithfixedmeaningandspecialfunctionareconnectedtogethersystematically.NowmiddleschoolstudentswhoarelearningEnglishasasecondlanguagearefacingauniversalvocabularyproblem.Theyarenotgoodatrememberingnewwordsanddistinguishingsimilarwords,letalonetheflexibleuseofthewordstheyhavelearnedalready.
Thelackofvocabularypreventsthemfromreadingsmoothly.Afewunfamiliarvocabulariescannotinfluencereadingprocessalot.However,itwillhaveseriousimpactonthespeedwhenunfamiliarwordsincreasetoahigherextent.Theinadequatevocabularyaffectsnotonlythereadingspeedandefficiencybutalsotheaccuracyofthemeaningofthepassage,becauseoncethestudentscomeacrossstrangewordsorphrases,usuallytheywillstopreadingandlookupadictionaryorothertoolbooks.Itwilldisruptthetempoofreading,afteroverandoveragain,theywilllosetheirpassiononEnglishreading.
Forthemiddleschoolstudents,theirvocabularyisveryconfined,butitistheimportantfoundationalfactorinEnglish.TheweaknessofthefoundationwillweakentheconfidenceandpassiononEnglishreadingofthestudents.
2.1.2TheLackofInterestinEnglishReading
InterestinEnglishreadingisavitalanddecisivefactor,whichdecideswhetherthestudentscanorcannotlearnEnglishwell.Learningactivelyorpassivelyisdecisivetothestudents’effectofteachingandlearningtoagreatextent.
MoststudentsstudyEnglishfortheexaminations,theydonotknowwhytheyarelearningEnglish,andtheyjustknowthattheirparentsandteacherstellthemthattheyshouldlearnit.TheyhavenointerestinEnglish,orsomeofthemaresuckersofwesternmoviesandtelevisionratherthanEnglishreading;orsomeofthemareinterestedinreadingthematerialoutofthecourseplan.TeachersarefailingtohelpthestudentstodeveloptheinterestsinEnglishreading.TheirchoiceofEnglishreadingmaterialshasagreatimpactonstudents’interestsandpassiononEnglishreading.Therefore,Englishteachersshouldtakepartofresponsibilityfortheinterestsofthestudents’inEnglishreading.Choosingtheappropriatereadingmaterialswhichcanappealtothestudentsisaproperwaytodevelopstudents’interestsinEnglish,anditwillmakeEnglishreadingmuchmoreeasily.
2.1.3TheLackofBackgroundKnowledgeofEnglish-SpokenCountries
Cultureisthesoulofalanguage,andlanguageisthecarrierofaculture.Readingcomprehensionisconstitutedbywordsandcertainstructure,withbackgroundinit.Soitisimportanttoknowaboutthebackground.(Zeng,Z.2010:
263)However,mostofthestudentshavelimitedbackgroundknowledge.EspeciallythestudentsintheruraldistricthavenotevenwatchedanEnglishmovieorlistenedtoanEnglishsong.Theycannotacquirethecultureofthosecountries,whichspeakEnglishasthefirstlanguage.WhenreadinganEnglishpassage,thestudentsalwaysthinkintheChinesepattern,theydonotknowhowtothinkinanotherway.Inotherwords,whenstudentsread,theymayknoweverysinglewordorstructureofthesentence.Buttheydon’tknowwhatthesentencemeansbecausetheyhavelittlebackgroundknowledge.EveryEnglisharticlemustcoverupwiththesocial-culturalknowledge.Theknow
