2、013摘 要无论是在生活中还是在工作中,英语都得到广泛应用。英语在中学教学中,也是一门很重要的学科,而作为一个英语学习者,听、说、读、写是其四项基本的能力很重要,尤其是英语阅读能力。但是中学生的阅读能力并不理想,存在许多的问题。本文首先探究了中学生在英语阅读中存在的问题,词汇贫乏,语法基础知识薄弱,缺乏对中西方文化背景的了解以及缺乏阅读技巧等,并分析其原因。最后给出了解决对策,学生要从基础做好,积累词汇量,而老师应选好合适的阅读材料,注重中西文化结合的灌输,提高学生的几项关键的阅读技巧,如如何处理生词,如何利用浏览和跳读来提高阅读的效率等。通过对中学生阅读问题的探讨以及对策的研究,解决中学生在

3、阅读中存在的问题,达到提高中学生的英语阅读能力的目的。 关键词:英语阅读技能;解决方案;中学生ABSTRACTNowadays, no matter in the daily life or in work, English has been widely used. What is more, English is an important subject in middle school. Of the four basic skills,listening,speaking,reading and writing, English reading is the most importan

4、t one in English learning. However, there are so many problems for middle school students in English reading. This thesis,firstly, aims at summarizing what problems middle school students usually encounter in their reading, the lack of vocabulary, interest, reading skills and the background knowledg

5、e; and secondly, with all the problems, it is to suggest some corresponding solutions to them after some possible reasons are explored, students should build up a firm vocabulary and accumulate background knowledge, and teachers should choose the proper reading material, and focus on the cultural kn

6、owledge in the passage, and teach them some major strategies of reading, such as the strategies of dealing with new words, and the use of skimming and scanning to improve the efficiency of English reading. By exploring the problems of the middle school students and the solutions, the thesis is atten

Introduction1.1 The Importance of English ReadingAs everyone knows, English is an international language; it is

12、 widely used all over the world. There are over twenty countries speak English as their official language or second language. The number of these people is nearly 800 million, it means that one knows English to some extent in every five persons; what is more, 60 percent of the radio broadcast is in

13、English all over the world, and most people who care about the current international affairs know that for most international conferences English is the first language, and English is one of the official languages for the United Nations. Learning and using English has become a certain trend in China

14、. Therefore, English is very important in nearly every aspect. English reading is one of the four basic skills, and it is the most important one in English learning. Most of the advanced science and technology material is written in English,so English reading is very important.1.2 The Current Situat

15、ion of Middle School Students English ReadingAs every English teacher in middle school knows, English reading takes up a large score proportion in any examination related to English. For example, the Senior High School Entrance Examination of Wuhan has increased the proportion of English reading, an

16、d English reading takes 60 scores in the college entrance examination of Hainan province.In middle schools in the context of China, there are a great number of problems concerning English learning, especially English reading. So as to improve their English reading ability, the primary step is to fin

17、d the problems. Middle school students are lacking of capacity to realize their problems and learn English in a proper way. Therefore, English teachers can help. Study the problems of the students in their English learning process, especially in the reading part. And then, help them to analyze the p

18、roblems so that to solve the problems.1.3 The Structure of This ThesisThis thesis studies the problems and solutions concerning English reading for middle school students. The first chapter introduces the research background, and the importance of this study. The second chapter comes up with several

19、 universal problems for middle school students, and analyzes the causes concerning English reading problems, there are five main problems. The third chapter puts forward corresponding solutions to such reading problems.2. The Problems in English Reading for Middle School Students2.1 The Major Proble

20、ms in English Reading among Middle School StudentsAs we all know that students should be the major role of English learning process. In order to learn English reading well, students and teachers need to realize the problems in English reading, and then study the problems and take measures to solve t

21、hem. Now we are going to discuss the main problems of the students, which ought to draw the teachers and students attention. Now that the student is the main role in teaching process, the main problems come from the students.2.1.1 The Lack of VocabularyVocabulary is a foundational but vital factor f

22、or English learners in every learning phrase, and it is also crucial in reading part. As everyone has known, sentences, paragraphs and passages can only make sense on the condition that words with fixed meaning and special function are connected together systematically. Now middle school students wh

23、o are learning English as a second language are facing a universal vocabulary problem. They are not good at remembering new words and distinguishing similar words, let alone the flexible use of the words they have learned already. The lack of vocabulary prevents them from reading smoothly. A few unf

24、amiliar vocabularies cannot influence reading process a lot. However, it will have serious impact on the speed when unfamiliar words increase to a higher extent. The inadequate vocabulary affects not only the reading speed and efficiency but also the accuracy of the meaning of the passage, because o

25、nce the students come across strange words or phrases, usually they will stop reading and look up a dictionary or other tool books. It will disrupt the tempo of reading, after over and over again, they will lose their passion on English reading.For the middle school students, their vocabulary is ver

26、y confined, but it is the important foundational factor in English. The weakness of the foundation will weaken the confidence and passion on English reading of the students.2.1.2 The Lack of Interest in English ReadingInterest in English reading is a vital and decisive factor, which decides whether

27、the students can or cannot learn English well. Learning actively or passively is decisive to the students effect of teaching and learning to a great extent.Most students study English for the examinations, they do not know why they are learning English, and they just know that their parents and teac

28、hers tell them that they should learn it. They have no interest in English, or some of them are suckers of western movies and television rather than English reading; or some of them are interested in reading the material out of the course plan. Teachers are failing to help the students to develop th

29、e interests in English reading. Their choice of English reading materials has a great impact on students interests and passion on English reading. Therefore, English teachers should take part of responsibility for the interests of the students in English reading. Choosing the appropriate reading mat

30、erials which can appeal to the students is a proper way to develop students interests in English, and it will make English reading much more easily.2.1.3 The Lack of Background Knowledge of English-Spoken CountriesCulture is the soul of a language, and language is the carrier of a culture. Reading c

31、omprehension is constituted by words and certain structure, with background in it. So it is important to know about the background. (Zeng, Z. 2010: 263)However, most of the students have limited background knowledge. Especially the students in the rural district have not even watched an English movi

32、e or listened to an English song. They cannot acquire the culture of those countries, which speak English as the first language. When reading an English passage,the students always think in the Chinese pattern,they do not know how to think in another way. In other words, when students read, they may know every single word or structure of the sentence. But they dont know what the sentence means because they have little background knowledge. Every English article must cover up with the social-cultural knowledge. The know
