Since1945morethanonemillionstudentsfromallovertheworldhavestudiedintheUnitedStates.Inarecentsingleyear,thereweremorethan150thousandforeignstudentswhocametotheUnitedStates'institutionsofhigherlearning.Theywerewelcomedandmostweresuccessfulintheiracademicstudies.ForeignstudentswhostudyintheUnitedStatesbenefitalotfromtheAmericaneducationalsystem.
Threedevelopmentsthattoday’sstudentsarebenefitingfromstartedmorethanacenturyagofollowingtheCivilWar.Thefirstofthesewastherapidgrowthofthetechnologicalandprofessionaleducationtomeettheurgentdemandsofacomplexindustrialandurbansociety.Newschoolsoftechnology,engineering,architecture,lawandmedicineflourished.Thesecondwastheprovisionforgraduatestudy,suchaswhathadlongexistedinFranceandGermany.HarvardandJohnHopkinsUniversitiesquicklytooktheleadinthisfield,butthestateuniversitiesdidnotlagfarbehind.Thethirdwastheincreasedprovisionfortheeducationofwomen.Thisincludedtheestablishmentofnewwomen'scolleges,suchasVassar,WellesleyandSmith,andtheadoptionofco-educationinallthenewstateuniversitiesaswellasinmanyprivateinstitutions.Thesedevelopments,thegrowthofthetechnologicalandprofessionaleducation,theprovisionforgraduatestudy,andtheincreasededucationalopportunitiesforwomenbeganoveracenturyago,followingtheendoftheCivilWar.

HighereducationinCanadaisofferedinavarietyofforms.Entrancerequirementsvaryfromoneprovincetoanother.Thetraditionaluniversitiesofferthree-yeargeneraldegreeprogramsandfour-yearhonorsdegreeprogramsemphasizingaspecialization.SevenoftheuniversitiesareFrench-speakingwhiletheothersareEnglish.Allthetraditionaluniversitiesareconcernedabouttherelationshipbetweentheircurriculaandtheeconomyandsociety.Graduatesinrecentyearshavefacedconsiderabledifficultyinfindingemployment.
TheCanadianprovincesmaintainjuniorcolleges,communitycolleges,andtechnicalinstitutes.Theyprovideavarietyofcourses,oftenshortterm,thatcatertoindividualinterests.Theseincludesubjectsofcurrenteventsandcalligraphy.AdulteducationhasbecomeincreasinglypopularinCanadainrecentyears.Almostallinstitutionsoffersomeadulteducationcourses.
